As we will begin Series 1400 in January, we thought we'd take a look back at Series 1300 to revisit some of the wonderful artists and their work that we've enjoyed at TQS.  Can you guess which guest from Series 1300 made which quilt? We even gave you a clue on one of the quilts.

We will post the answers in Monday's Quilter's Quips and Tips!

This sashiko-stitched masterpiece from Hidemi Endo uses a wide variety of cotton stripes, solids, kasuri, and katazome that are indigo-dyed.  The sashiko stitches include chidori, koma, and matuba. The quilt was deigned by Keiko Morihiro and exhibited at IQF Houston 2013 where it won an Honorable Mention.

Here is a new way to see quilts. We are honoring male quilters this holiday season. Michael James is our Quilt Legend this year, but as with all of us, he is standing on the shoulders of those who came before.

One such quilter is Ernest Haight. The International Quilt Study Center and Museum had a wonderful exhibit telling his story. You can enjoy this exhibit yourself. Be sure to read the signs and look at the quilting (make sure to look close at the tumbling blocks quilt). Also, check out the fabrics from the dating of the quilts. Often the quilts show stitching declaring who the quilt was given to and who did the quilting.

Here's how to use the new system:

  1. Click the picture below to start
  2. Use the side arrows to go to the next page
  3. Want to zoom in? Just click on the picture and it will fill the screen
  4. Want to zoom in farther? Slide the slider at the top to get up very close.
  5. Then click the picture to go back to normal.
  6. It's that easy.
Do you like it?

Life Unfolding did just that, it unfolded during the design process for Barbara Olson (tqs member: barbquiltart). She says, "It first revealed a forest, then planets and evolved to an under the ocean image. Stain stitching, yarns and beads add to its energy."

Almost a year ago, Ricky invited me to share my thoughts on being a "Healthy Quilter" here on TQS. At almost the same time, I started the journey to re-lose some of the weight that I had re-gained in the previous three years. I'm happy to say that though its taken almost a year, I've lost twenty-five pounds, and am back to ONE HUNDRED pounds lost!

Some of my tips for losing weight at an "advanced age?"

  • Be patient. The weight just doesn't fall off of you like it did when you were twenty.
  • Be sure to get enough protein. Protein can help keep you from being hungry.
  • Give yourself grace. If you fail one day or one meal, its okay. Just continue on eating the healthiest food possible.

You can read more about my weight loss journey on my blog at Debby Weighs In.

This exhibition, The Many Faces of Jerusalem, shown at IQF Houston 2013, is meant to express what the personal image of Jerusalem is to the quilter who made each piece.  It is presented by the Israeli Quilters Assocation.  This is part I of II parts.

Russian photographer, Alexey Kljatov, designed his own home rigged camera system and shot beautiful pictures of snowflakes. Every snowflake is said to be unique and some are in shapes we are not accustomed to thinking of as snowflakes.
