6247_tqm_winter_exhibits2pdf1.jpgIn just two years of existence, the Texas Quilt Museum has surprised even its co-founders by attracting more than 20,000 visitors from all 50 states and 38 countries as well as more than 300 bus groups to its home in scenic La Grange, Texas.

And in addition to thrilling and educating seasoned quilters, art lovers, and the curious alike, the Museum has featured many debut and/or exclusive exhibits, which change out each season.

The Museum's winter 2014 offerings will include "Semper Tedium," "SAQA: People and Portraits," and "Winners from the 2013 Quilts: A World of Beauty" judged show.

Here is a rundown of each exhibit, on display from January 9-March 30, 2014.

Gallery I - Semper Tedium

The 20 studio art quilts in this exhibit were made over the course of more than two decades from the talented hands of four different artists including Paula Nadelstern, Katherine Knauer, Amy Orr, and Robin Schwalb. The quilts here celebrate the "Slow Art" movement of artists who embrace "handmade" as a mantra, blending traditional process with modern techniques and assemblage. The exhibit revels in process, rejoices in community, and celebrates artwork created in "as much time as it takes." Curated for the Texas Quilt Museum by Dr. Sandra Sider; Managing Exhibit Curator Amy Orr.

Gallery II - Winners from Quilts: A  World of Beauty 2013

A selection of 13 winning efforts from the recent judged show of the International Quilt Association, where the world's best artists send their work to complete. This year, $102,800 in cash, non-purchase prizes were awarded to IQA member artists in categories that run the gamut from traditional handmade wholecloth to computer-enhanced digital imagery. Sponsored by the International Quilt Association.

Gallery III - SAQA: People & Portraits

This exhibit celebrates the expressiveness of the human face in 40 stunning quilts created by members of the international organization Studio Art Quilt Associates. The diverse designs focus on a variety of emotional states and the ways in which people interact. The invitational exhibit is based on the book Art Quilt Portfolio: People and Portraits by Martha Sielman. Curated by Pat Kumicich.

The Texas Quilt Museum is located at 140 W. Colorado St., La Grange, Texas 78945.

It opened in 2011 and is housed in two 19th-century buildings in the Historic District of La Grange. Its restoration has won both Preservation Texas and Main Street awards. The Museum complex also includes a period Texas garden with a monumental 13' x 85' outdoor mural, Quilts...History in the Making, as its focal point. Learn more at www.texasquiltmuseum.org.

Forever and ever. Have you ever said that about a new diet or weight loss method you are using?

Finally. Finally it seems like you have found something that is working for you. And you think, “I will eat this way forever.” Or, “I will eliminate that food group from my diet forever.” Or, “If this is what it takes, I will keep coming to these meetings for the rest of my life.” Or, “this exercise method is the key to my new thinner self. I will do this for the rest of my life.”

I have. When I started Weight Watchers nine years ago, and it looked like it was actually going to “take,” I remember thinking (and even saying out loud) that I would continue coming to the meetings for the rest of my life. I thought of it as being like an alcoholic who needs to keep going to AA meetings to stay on the straight and narrow.

Only I didn’t. Me and W.W. parted ways  after a couple of years. I like to call it an amicable divorce.

Since starting this last weight loss journey almost 9 years ago, there have been a lot of twists and turns in my diet. The kinds of food I eat, the portions, and how often I eat have changed several times. I have no doubt that as time goes on, I will continue to make changes in my food choices and portions.

The main point, I guess, is to know that the human body is very complex and is not static. It changes, and its needs change. To navigate weight loss and maintenance successfully, I think you have to agree to this and at least be willing to consider change along the way.

If you'd like to read more about my changing diet, click on over to my blog. There is some interesting conversation in the comments from other folks as well.

It's almost time for Road to California and TQS will be there! Stop by the booth and say "Hi!" If that isn't enough, Alex will be presenting an Evening with Alex Anderson on Saturday, the 25th.  The lecture is 7:30pm - 9:30pm ($25).

From stay-at-home mom to worldwide quilting ambassador, Alex has had quite a journey! Join her for this light-hearted virtual trunk show that illustrates the arc of her ever-changing (and still evolving) quilting odyssey. You're guaranteed a laugh or two as you see her work, and learn the secret stories behind her quilts.

And just for fun -  some of you might remember when we found all of these license plates at the Road to California parking lot in 2010. Once again showing that creativity has no bounds, we present Quilters Hit the Road.
