The Hallmark Channel's "Home & Family" show invited Alex to teach a quick lesson. Hosted by Mark Steines and Christine Ferrare, Alex joined Country singing star Martina McBride , actress Deidre Hall ("Days of Our Lives"), veterinarian Dr. Courtney Campbell, and Olympian and Super Bowl winner Willie Gault.

Taping was on the lot of Universal Studios and we had to have a special pass and good directions to find the set. We passed old Western Towns and other movie sets--fun. Everyone was great to work with and very professional. The show was taped on Monday and shown on Tuesday Jan 28, 2014. John was in the "green room" with his camera.

What you are seeing is the actual taping shown on the monitor so the quality is not TV quality. BUT we wanted you to have a chance to see what happened. (Now Updated To Be the Actual Broadcast)

So if you missed it, take a look, and a big "thank you" to everyone at "Home & Family" for making me feel at home.

Libby Lehman has won the Rice University Distinguished Alumni Award for 2014! This is a huge honor! Upon hearing the news Libby said, "I am very honored!”

Lester, Libby’s husband, said he was almost choking up when Robert (Bob) L. Clarke (former Comptroller of the Currency during the Reagan and Bush administrations and head of the Rice University Alumni Association) told him the news. This award usually goes to scientists, civic leaders or corporate giants, so it makes it even more meaningful that Libby's excellence in the art of creating and teaching quilting has been recognized. Previous recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award include George R. Brown, prominent Houstonian entrepreneur and construction magnate (if the name sound familiar, the convention center where the International Quilt Festival is held is named after him) and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Lonesome Dove, Larry McMurtry.

Lester reported, Libby, in my opinion, is very worthy of the honor. She has touched the lives of a great many people as evidenced by the thousands of get well cards she was sent after word got out about her stroke and the almost half a million hits on her CaringBridge site regarding her condition. She feels greatly honored. We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support during this time of need."

Libby’s sister, Cathy Arnold, added, "Kudos to my sweet husband, Bill, who loves his sister-in-law, Libby, so much that he worked very hard to help bring Libby's nomination for this award to the Selection Committee's attention and to make sure that she had the appropriate Letters of Recommendation from people we all know and love like Ricky Tims, Alex Anderson, Karey Bresenhan, and many others."

Hey TQS, let’s whoop it up for Libby Lehman!

All The Pretty Pieces by Lorraine K. Williams was on display as part of the Traditional Mixed category at Road to California 2014.  Lorraine writes, "This is one of my favorite designers and the pattern just spoke to me.  It was particularly fun to raid my fabric stash for this project, finding fabrics that would work together overall, but still make each block idifferent and special. Each block took on a life of its own. Little fussy cut surprises are hidden throughout. The hand applique was a pure joy. It is that 8th quilt that I have quilted myself on my A-1, and the first of my own making."

The winter Olympics are just around the corner and the theme for 2014 is based on a patchwork quilt.

At the heart of the Look of the Games concept design lies the principle of the "patchwork quilt" - a combination of 16 designs representing the most famous traditional Russian arts and crafts, ranging from Gzhel to Khokhloma. The Look of the Games concept is the visual embodiment of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games philosophy and is intended to express the character of modern Russia whilst at the same time introducing guests from all over the world to traditional Russian hospitality.

The quilt includes 16 designs representing the most famous traditional Russian arts and crafts: Uftyuzhskaya painting, Vologda lace, Gzhel and Zhostovo painting, Kubachi patterns, Pavlov Posad shawls, Mezenskaya painting and Khokhloma, Yakutsk patterns and Ivanovo chintz. Click below to learn more about these traditional arts and crafts.
