The National Quilt Museum is proud to present Distortion from the European Patchwork Meeting. This phenomenal exhibit is the result of an international contest featuring over forty quilt artists from around the world. The exhibit will run from April 4 - June 24, so if you are in Paducah for the show, make sure to stop by and visit the exhibit. This will be the only stop in the US!

Quilt National 2013 – the 18th biennial juried exhibition – is the quintessential and much anticipated showcase of contemporary art quilts and it's coming to the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles May 3 - July 20, 2014.

The exhibit presents a current representation of the art quilt medium in all of its range of styles, techniques, and multi-faceted contemporary expressions. Its purpose is “to carry the definition of quilting far beyond its traditional parameters and to promote quilt making as what it always has been—an art form.” The quilts selected for Quilt National have never been exhibited or published before their premier showing in 2013 at the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio.

The jurors for this exhibition are Linda Colsh, Judith Content, and Penny McMorris. They selected 87 works from 851 entries. A selection of 48 quilts will be on exhibit including juror Judith Content’s shibori dyed Cenote Azule and the quilts of two local artists Leslie Bixel and Joan Schulze. Layered with felt and net, Dianne Firth’s Storm, casts a shadow on the wall creating a beautiful effect of multiple images. Texture, fusing, applique, dyeing and surface design, and embellishments are a few of the processes that stand out in this display.

One of the hardest things to do is to find what you are looking for. Sometimes you want to know everything about binding. Or you remember a technique by Ricky.....but in what show????  We are experimenting with approaches to make this easier for you. Below is a table that you can sort by column (artist, show #, technique) or just type a word in the Filter box to see everything for "Fusing".

Currently a friend of TQS is recording every segment of every show in detail so we can find whatever happened. This is expected by July but we have a shorter version until then. It is still a work in progress, but we are excited by the possibilities.

Below is a screen picture. The actual table will be clearer and the type bigger when it launches. Also, the table will scroll so you can see a lot on one page. We will still have a Search button for the whole site.

Insects taken to flights of fanciful art and gorgeous antique quilts from a storied collection will be showcased in the spring exhibits on display at the Texas Quilt Museum from April 3-June 29, 2014.

Butterflies and Their Beautiful Kin: This is a juried exhibition of contemporary quilts inspired by the mission and purpose of the National Butterfly Center.  

“Butterflies symbolize rebirth and metamorphosis. This exhibit shows how modern artists are reworking quiltmaking, contributing new techniques, processes, and concepts to the historical continuum of quilts,” adds Dr. Sandra Sider, Museum Curator.

An Invitational Flutter of Butterfly Art Quilts: Wings of the Lepidoptera continue to flutter in this invitational exhibit featuring 17 amazing butterfly quilts, carefully selected by our Museum Curator.

Also on exhibit, Antique Quilts from the Gundersheimer Collection: This exhibit features eight incredible antique quilts in a wide variety of styles and genres from the personal collection of Karen and Werner Gundersheimer. 

The Texas Quilt Museum is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit entity. It is housed in two historic 1890s buildings, which provide a fine showcase for both antique and contemporary quilt art with their high ceilings, brick walls, and original hardwood floors.

Home for the new museum is the picturesque Central Texas town of La Grange, located on the winding Colorado River between two major highways, making it within easy driving distance of the state’s major cities and airline hubs.

We missed you!!! Our hosting company had a major outage and had the site down for over 24 hours. OUCH.

The good news is that it wasn't your fault! (Or our fault.) Yes we are all safe. It wasn't a hack but a hardware problem.

Everyone needs one of these, maybe not quite as ornate...It is a Pinchbeck Chatelaine made in England sometime around 1730-1735.  It contains a scissor case, needle case, etui (which can also be used for holding needles, cosmetics or other articles), and two thimble cases.  It is currently in storage at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.    Click here to learn more.
