Explore new techniques - and have lots of fun! - as mixed-media textile artist Valerie C. White reveals the pleasures and rewards of creating prayer flags from leftover fabric scraps. Valerie, one of 44 artists invited by the Historical Society Museum in Washington, DC, to create a quilt celebrating the 2008 election of Barack Obama, shows how she produces her thoughtfully constructed little (5" x 11") artworks, and shares ideas for enhancing them with hand and machine stitching, paint sticks, watercolor pencils, and markers. We then switch gears for a field visit with busy Oregon quilter Elizabeth Hartman. Elizabeth - known for her clean modern style, use of bright color, and masterful handling of negative space - demos her favorite technique for making pieced letters.

With the holiday gifting season right around the corner we thought we would give you a head start.  Over the next few weeks, we will share with you a variety of creative gift ideas that are fun, easy to make and unique.

Coasters are always a welcome gift, but why not make them even more outstanding than the commercially produced available almost everywhere.  We loved this idea (An Oregon Cottage) of using pages from favorite books or sheets of music.  We thought it might be fun to take the idea a bit further to show a love of quilting:

Square Leaf Study by Meredith Woolnough

Did you ever think that you could create light and delicate art objects using the embroidery feature and wash away stabilizer on your domestic BERNINA?  Australian artist Meredith Woolnough creates startlingly beautiful pieces inspired primarily by underwater corals and other life forms.  You will never look at machine embroidery in the same way.

Meredith is very inspired by nature, especially the plants she finds while diving in the ocean.  After drawing out the design on water washable stabilizer, it is put in a hoop and free-motion quilted.  The completed design is then placed in water to remove the stabilizer.

Check out the amazing pieces Meredith has created on her website.  There is even a video lesson for those wanting to try out this process yourself.
