Finally, we corral radio personality Pat Sloan in Portland, OR, where she shares some of her quilts and demostrates how to do an appliqué running stitch by hand.

Sheila demonstrates her clever technique for piecing curves without pins and offers loads of tips and suggestions for machine quilting, including how to tackle multiple thread changes. Also on hand: machine quilter, author, and popular blogger Angela Walters, who shows how she gives traditional quilting designs a modern twist and determines strategies for quilting the negative spaces in those Modern (and other) Quilts.

Answer #7 - Show 1410: You Can Have It All: Two Modern-Day Quilters Mix Old and New featuring Bonnie Hunter / Shelly Burge

In this show, Bonnie shares her quilter-friendly system for cutting and sorting scraps, her technique for making quick 2"-finished half-square-triangle units from strips, and her ingenious "Leaders and Enders" technique, which makes thrifty use of leftovers and thread. In addition, Bonnie shows how she builds a quilt using fabric "strings" and phonebook-page foundations, and how to play with the finished blocks. We end with a field trip to meet Nebraska quiltmaker, author, teacher, and quilt judge Shelly Burge, who currently incorporates copper crimping in her quilts—while curating her collection of over 300 (!) vintage sewing machines.

Answer #8 - Show 605: Improvisational Landscapes featuring Kate Cox / Dan Purcell

British-born textile artist Kate Cox shares her work and shows how to employ raw-edge appliqué and free-motion quilting to create an impressionistic quilt based on a favorite photograph. Kate also demonstrates her freehand approach to cutting with a rotary cutter. Ricky introduces a terrific method for resist-dyeing a design on fabric using school glue, Procion dyes, and soda ash.

Answer #9 - Show 1513: Mary Mashuta & Roberta Horton - TQS Quilting Legends 2014

Join us as we visit the charming 1915 Craftsman bungalow that is home to renowned quiltmakers, teachers, authors, and twin sisters Roberta Horton and Mary Mashuta. Although they share many interests, each has her own workspace and unique approach to the art and craft of quiltmaking - and we get to sample both. First Mary reveals her newest passion - Sashiko by machine - demonstrating how to break down and adapt a complex hand-stitching design for machine stitching. Then Roberta shares her process for creating your own fabric album using cherished family photos, from choosing suitable images to transferring, sewing, and embellishing them.

Answer #10 - Show 904: The Wonderful World of Embroidered Appliqué featuring Sarah Vedeler

In 2002, Sarah Vedeler left a career as a software engineer to become a full-time mom - and fell in love with quilting and embroidery. Nowadays, she calls upon her software background to design outstanding embroidery and embroidered appliqué patterns, teaches, and creates beautiful quilts. She joins us to demonstrate how to use the AccuQuilt Go! Fabric Cutter and dies to create embroidered appliqué and shares some helpful hints for giving your digital embroidery "a pop" with quilting. Speaking of quilting: Alex shows how easy it is to create an original quilting design to fill a specific area of your quilt.

Australian children’s book author Claire Saxby has delighted children for many years with stories and poems that span a wide range of topics. My Name is Lizzie Flynn, published in 2015, is a picture book about a convict girl traveling to Australia in 1841 and about the making of the Rajah quilt. The moving story and beautiful illustrations by Lizzy Newcomb bring this interesting story to life in a manner that is understandable for a young reader.

My visit with Sylvia Pippen was like meeting a rock star! I have been a fan for a couple of years after a friend in Pacific Grove recommended Sylvia's class at the Empty Spools seminars.  I enjoyed Sylvia's class so much that I became a Sashiko groupie...and a fan of Sylvia's patterns.  I am currently working on one of her BOMs and have throughly enjoyed the process of yet another handwork project. When I met Sylvia she was living on Hilo and was in the process of moving to La Conner, Washington where her mother Kitty Pippen lived.  Kitty is also an amazing artist and many of the pieces you will see in the slide show were pieced and stitched by Kitty.  Like mother, like daughter...the talent runs deep and they have taught together at Empty Spools.  Both are published authors of Asian-inspired quilts and the relationship is one of mutual artistic support.

I feel so lucky to have visited Sylvia when she was working on her latest BOM to be released this Fall!!!  This next BOM is stunning!!! I know I will be participating in this next BOM adventure as it incorporates not only Sashiko but appliqué.  The photos do not do it justice! But, as you can see in the photo there are wonderful ocean inspired motifs and multiple colors of Sashiko thread. The BOM will include not only the thread but the awesome fabrics that she used while creating this wonderful piece.

 These close ups show you the amazing decisions that go into the fabric choices, stitching and placements.  I can't wait for this BOM to start which means I had better finish my other Sashiko project...I'm getting close!  Be sure to check out the Quilt Roadies You Tube channel today for the interview with Sylvia Pippen in La Conner, Washington.
