Being a perfectionist and frustrated with her own traditional hand appliqué results, Rosa Rojas was determined to find a better, faster and easier method for achieving the beautiful hand appliqué she desired. The result was the Apliquick tool that allows a person to make even the tiniest of perfect circles. This Spanish designer and artist says that it is all about ‘letting the tools’ do the work for you. Addicted to appliqué, Rosa even shows you how easy it is to design and make your own Hawaiian quilt.
Ricky also has a demonstration of a twisted thread chain, by machine, that will add texture and interest to your quilt work. Variations and interest can be enhanced depending on the size and type of silk ribbon or cording used.

Here is the quote on my (Capt'n John) Doctor's wall. I thought it was a good phrase to concentrate on in December:
Every Day is a New Day
Today I will Live, Love, and Make a Difference
Today is not a Throw Away Day
For nearly 30 years this TQS Legend has produced high quality contemporary art quilts that have been coveted and collected by a broad range of admirers.
From her early beginnings as a painter dabbling in traditional quilt making, her work has evolved from structured Mandalas and mind-blowing dimensional pieces to very painterly landscapes and abstracts executed with the finest fabrics and most creative stitching techniques.
Were you able to guess? It's Katie Pasquini Masopust!!!

Seth Doane from CBS Sunday Morning interviewed Ricky a few years back about the billion-dollar quilting industry. Ricky discusses his feelings about his craft and even gets Seth to try machine quilting a few feathers! Karey Bresenhan of Quilts Inc. mentions that quilting is an almost 4 billion dollar industry. This interview was made over four years ago. How much do you think it brings in today?

It happened in the blink of an eye...all the Who's in Whoville are ready for Christmas. For those of us that celebrate Christmas, it is hard to believe how fast it arrived and how much stitching we have left to do!!! I have been stitching pillowcases, napkins, place-mats, table runners...all kinds of handmade items to share the love of the holidays. The history of gift giving has many sources. For Christians it is a reminder of the Three Wise Men who brought gifts to the baby Jesus. But gift giving this time of year dates back even earlier than Christianity and is connected to celebrations that were dedicated to crops that were harvested. Commercialized gift giving has it origins in America and has evolved into a shopping frenzy starting with Black Friday.
For me one of the best parts of the Christmas holiday season is the decorating because I get to reacquaint myself with quilting items I have made and those that were gifted to me. I treasure those stitched items that remind me of someone special. I think that is why I like to make gifts...I am sure most people enjoy the thought and time that goes into making something special and it takes me back to the core of what Christmas is all about...sharing one's gifts and talents.
Although I love all kinds of stitchery and quilts, it seems to me I am drawn to those that reflect the Christmas holiday and winter months. What about you?... What are your favorite stitching themes? I hope you enjoy the slideshow of my Christmas collection and maybe see something you want to make for yourself!
