CBS Sunday Morning featured Ben Venom. Inspired by Gee's Bend quilters, Bob Ross the painter, and rock and roll music; this 'heavy metal' artist puts his own spin on quilting.

I feel so lucky never to have heard the sound of a machine gun. It is certainly not a sound I care to celebrate. It seems to suggest everything that is the opposite of quilting and quilts. I agree with Ann Pocklington that there are so many incredibly gifted quilters to celebrate, I wonder why CBS News chose to highlight this one and TQS chose to add the clip to the blog. As Piecequilts writes, it is a real turn off. Disappointing.

Thank you for showing a different perspective in quilting. I had never thought of a sewing machine sounding like a machine gun, but yes, especially at full speed and with certain fabrics. His art is definitely fringe but with an amazing raw energy. His transformation from discarded materials to dynamic images is very refreshing.

There's lots of great quilters out there - can we celebrate those who don't see using a sewing machine like using a gun and are not proud of leaving blood on there work?

Excuse me but....
"Ben Venom likens the sound of a sewing machine to the sound of a machine gun"
I find that statement to be a real turn off!!!
I find it appalling to associate a sewing machine gun with a machine gun!
