(Click here to learn more about the women in the banner.)

The Century of Womens' Progress Quilt Challenge - 1920-2020 is a story quilt challenge that honors the hundred-year anniversary of the 19th amendment and highlights progress toward equality over the century since women obtained the vote. While acknowledging that legal, social, economic and political impediments to equality remain, the period between 1920 and the present includes many milestones, achievements, and changes improving the quality of life for women in the United States today. This challenge focuses on celebrating these changes.

Entry into this challenge includes a quilt of original design and an accompanying written story, in the words of the maker, about the subject of that quilt.

Entries accepted 12/1/2019-1/4/2020.

Criminal Quilts is an art & heritage project inspired by photographs and documents relating to women held in Stafford Prison 1877-1916. It was created and developed by Ruth Singer in partnership with the Staffordshire Record Office.

This video has Ruth talking about the project and showing the multitude of techniques she used to create her pieces, including everything from silk screen and photo imaging to embroidery and machine piecing. She also discusses how these "criminals"  were real women just trying to live their lives.

The project will be on display at The Brampton Museum, Newcastle under Lyme, 25th May – 7th July 2019.

When Jenny K. Lyon, author of Free-Motion Quilting from Ordinary to Extraordinary, says your work has "beautiful quilting and a gorgeous design," you have already won, but Sherry Werum's quilt, My Modern May Basket, (62" x 62") also won 2nd Place in the Pacific International Quilt Festival's Mid-Century Modern Quilt Competition 2017.

We recently found the quilt on exhibit at AQS QuiltWeek Spring Paducah 2019 and were also struck by the exceptional quilting which repeats and enhances the motifs of the basket pieces inspired by the May Basket Liberty Cover 1927 by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Clover Mini Iron II

Have you ever tried to press a seam on a very small quilt block or the edge of a tiny appliqué piece with a regular iron?

If you have, you know how difficult that is...the iron blocks your view, and it is difficult to hold your work without burning your fingers because the iron is so much larger than what you are ironing. Clover Mini Iron II to the rescue!

Fabia Diniz of Brazil created a whimsical masterpiece with her quilt, Adventures in Wonderland. It is a wholecloth quilt that Fabia "thread sketched" to create images from the beloved Lewis Carroll classic. Take a look and see if you can find your favorite characters.

Adventures in Wonderland (49" x 60") was exhibited in the Small Wall Quilts - Stationary Machine Quilted category at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah Spring 2019.

Missie used a layering technique of wool and cotton in her beautiful Rustic Wedding quilt. The wool appliqué is raw-edge while the cotton appliqué has a finished edge. Ricky loved her use of color in this quilt.
