Jeanie O'Sullivan's Ties That Bind was inspired by the importance of family, represented here through nature. "Forget-me-not flowers represent memories - bound together within the net of the family we are given and the family we choose." Winning Best Of Country for New Zealand in the World Quilt Competition at PIQF 2019, "the quilt is hand appliquéd over a pieced background and hand quilted." So much intricate detail is packed into each flower makes this a quilt not to be missed.

Ties That Bind by Jeanie O'Sullivan of New Zealand won Best Of Country in the World Quilt Competition at the Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF) 2019.

Winter Encounter is a beautiful outdoor scene quilt by Carol Ann Sinnreich depicting the cold of winter and the reality of nature. Here's what Carol Ann has to say about her work, "Snow, cold wind, predators and opportunity force wildlife to keep moving. Winter scenes are more colorful. Reflective light from snow creates a multitude of colors setting the mood and the challenge."

The quilt is 54" x 46 1/2" and is made from cotton. It is appliquéd, has machine thread embroidery, and some pigma pen. It is hand and machine quilted.

Alexandra Hindrischedt created her quilt, Little Blue Bird, based on one by Margaret Docherty with the title Little Brown Bird. For Alexandra, this quilt was a labor of love. "I sewed all the appliqué by hand, they are partly stuffed and decorated with embroideries. There are also trapunto blocks done by hand at the top. I did the longarm quilting myself." Winning First Place Traditional at the World Quilt Competition at PIQF 2019, Little Blue Bird is a wonder to behold with some piece of hand appliqué or machine quilting catching your eye at every turn. Can you spot the little blue bird?

Laura Wasilowski was a surprise guest last week at Alex's Holiday Party. As a gift for Alex she wrote the Song of 2020 highlighting how she feels about the past year and all its "fun". If this doesn't bring a smile to your face, nothing will.

Thank you Laura for sharing your gifts of song and creativity.

Tessellating Wings (52 1/2″ x 63 1/2″) is the first of three in Wendy Butler Berns' Jewel Pearce Patterson Exhibition Series, Out on a Limb. Wendy was challenging herself to try new techniques and to stretch her design skills. The quilt is constructed using her Picture Image Machine Appliqué process.

It is the first time she used oil paint sticks to create added surface design to several of the darker valued rust colored fabrics.

Learn more about the quilt by visiting Wendy's website.

Which kind of quilter are you? Vote below.

You're in the quilting zone all day long; what do you listen to? Is it time for TV? Do you pop in an audio book? Are your iTunes cranked? Do you open the window and listen to the sound of crickets and the trilling of a lark? OR, is it quiet time, no sounds but the gentle hum of your machine or the quilt thread tiptoeing through the layers?
