Sheila decided this quilt, Forest Light, needed more "pop" so she created scrap bags of fabric with additional colors to choose from and added them to the quilt to give it that "light".

Throughout the show, Jean expresses her love for the process of color exploration, gives a tour of the Stitchin' Post, shares a mini-history lesson of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, and then gives her own thoughts on all the different things she has accomplished in her long lasting career. Quilting master Bethanne Nemesh has created a delightful scene from the Australian rainforest using dense quilting motifs to hint at the forest with its shimmering filtered light and richness of the earth. Aboriginal motifs are also hinted at as part of the border on her quilt, Homecoming.

Homecoming was on display at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2019.

You can learn how Bethanne works her magic in Show 2107: Extraordinary Binding Techniques and Amazing Fabric Collage.

Lilo recently visited the European Patchwork Meeting in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France and discovered a wonderful exhibit they were featuring there. Swiss quilt group patCHquilt was celebrating their thirtieth anniversary by putting on a showcase of 100 challenge quilts for the occasion. The challenge was open to all members of the group of every skill level and each quilt had to adhere to the following criteria:

  • Works must be original, not from a kit and must include a red border.
  • They must be 30 cm wide, 120 cm long, and displayed portrait style.
  • The quilt must include at least 1/2 of the Edelweiss fabric (that each person received), and feature a piece of that same fabric that is 10 cm x 10 cm in size.

To join in the celebration with patCHquilt, we will be featuring four of the challenge quilts each week that were displayed as part of the exhibition at the European Patchwork Meeting.

Please enjoy the next four quilts from Heidi Hunninghaus, Heidi Kalt, Heidi Stucki, and Irene Knecht.

The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is a non-profit whose mission is to educate the public about the art, skill, and heritage of traditional and contemporary quilts and fiber arts, while enhancing the cultural vitality of the community of Sisters and Central Oregon. The kick off event for the 2020 season was a wonderful luncheon for sponsors/supporters where the guest speaker was Kimberly Bennefield of the Portland Modern Quilt Guild.

We first met Kimberly at the previous Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in 2018, where she and members of the PMQ Guild had a special group display.

She shared her story and some of her quilts at the luncheon.

The most amazing part of her presentation???? She has only been quilting for 3 1/2 years!!! Yes, you heard me...since becoming an empty nester she decided to take up quilting and took it one step forward by taking over her garage for her new longarm. Listening to her presentation was such a shot in the arm for this quilter. Sometimes we get into a quilting mode that keeps you marching down the same thread and all you need to get excited about the road less traveled is to hear the story of a new quilter who has embraced the art with wild abandon!

Kimberly was the pervious President of the Portland Modern Quilt Guild and is now the program director. The Portland Modern Quilt Guild is a very active guild and is the largest Modern Quilt Guild in the US. With such a passionate member as Kimberly, I suspect there will be some amazing programs in 2020.

Stay tuned and travel along with us on Quilt Roadies.
