On the 4th of July, Alden Lane Nursery (home of Quilting in the Garden / QITG) was a glow with Wedding festivities. Who, you might be asking was tying the knot? Cyndee´s (my personal friend, fellow pirate and leader of QITG) son Matt and his beloved fiancee, Mia were celebrating in style. I told Cyndee anything she needed, she could count me in. First duty was to sew a tiny pocket for inside the wedding dress to hold a coin (sorry about the blurry picture), then on the 3rd it truly was "all hands on deck". The details were incredible. Things to take note of: The green rectangle was for the ring bearer - when finished it had pink ribbons securing the rings. The party favors were pink fire crackers in bags with pink and brown jelly bellies along with a candy bar - OH yes!!!. The cake was tiered cup cakes and guess who made the flower girls flower ball? Also, Mia´s parents are from Vietnam, and her Mom wore a traditional "long dress" - check out the fabric on that!! It was pleasure and honor helping behind the scenes - the amount of friendship, care and love in the air was intoxicating. The best part? I hear that across the United states fire works were displayed - now THAT was working out the details. OK - so this is not exactly quilt related, but honestly - who can´t resist a love story?

It´s that wondeful day of the year when Americans celebrate Independence Day - the Fourth of July. Twelve miles up the valley from La Veta in the village of Cuchara, the festivities were in full swing for the 41st Annual Curchara Fourth of July Parade. Cuchara has about 75 year round residents but summer homes in the mountain valley drive up the population considerably - like to about 350. However, for their parade, 3000 people show up and the village is swarming with visitors.

I hope you enjoy the photos. The children are precious! ... and the dogs? - we´ll... the picture of the dogs is worth a thousand words. I am excited to have my best friend from high school and his family here to celebrate for a few days. if you celebrate the 4th of July, what did you do to celebrate today?

Once and a blue moon I have the pleasure to simply take a day off and play - or was that run errands? It was just fun to get out and cruise around (On so many levels that is rare these days!)In any case, I stopped by Quilters Inn in Danville, CA and guess who I ran into? Pam - my celebrity stunt sewer . When was the last time you were at a quilt shop and how far was it from your house?  Was it destination specific or part of a well planned shopping loop (thinking of gas prices here)?

Recently the Girl´s of Hillcrest Court had a reunion (March 8th blog) - Kerry, the darling little red head upper left, sent me some photos and I could not help but notice all the trim on our dresses. Perhaps this explains my love of ricrac! What are some of the trimmings you are drawn to and does it date you?

July Block "New Day Mix" by Sue Garman

We can´t believe it´s July already. It wasn´t so long ago that we began this TQS exclusive Block of the Month project.  And once again Sue Garman has given us a fun and beautiful block to work on.  This month we will continue to practice our applique´ skills by working on stars, hearts, and circles.  We truly enjoy seeing everyone´s quilts taking shape.  So be sure to post (and announce) when your blocks are completed.  To download the pattern and directions for this block click here.

(Capt´n John)--This is a family quilt.  Alex´s Dad, like all kids of his generation, had a special hero.  His name was Charles Lindbergh.  That´s right, the famous early aviator.  Alex´s Dad, Joe, remembers whenver a plane came over (which wasn´t often) all the kids would run outside and wave and say "Hi, Lindy".  Joe was very much a fan of Lindy, and so his 2nd grade teacher, a family friend, made this quilt for him. She had just started quilting.  This dates the quilt to about 1932.

This was a very "loved" and used quilt.  It has faded quite a bit in spots and shows a number of stains.  Below I tried to get some close-ups of the fabrics.
