"6 x 6 Comes Up Roses" by Kathleen McCrady

It seems that as quilt artists, we inevitably revisit old designs when looking for inspiration.  Often we are not even aware that we are doing so.  That theme is certainly in evidence at the Texas Quilt Museum's current show "Selections From the Book 500 Traditional Quilts".

The museum will showcase three galleries of contemporary quilts inspired by traditional designs.  “Traditional quilts will always have a place in
people’s hearts. Their beauty, their workmanship, their ability to evoke gentler times, the memories that they bring to mind—these are integral to their tremendous appeal,” Karey Bresenhan writes in the book’s introduction.

The exhibit is on view through March 28, 2015.

Exhibit to showcase Steamboat quilter David Taylor

Taylor’s detailed stitching on display at Steamboat Art Museum

by:  Mike Lawrence  May 28, 2010

— A new exhibit at Steamboat Art Museum will put the colorful work of internationally renowned quilter David Taylor under one roof for the first time.

“I’m so thankful for this opportunity,” Taylor said about the exhibit, which opens at 5 p.m. today at the downtown museum where it will be displayed until Oct. 17. “None of my barn animals have been together.”

Taylor said museum president and curator Shirley Stocks approached him about three years ago with the idea of displaying his quilts at Steamboat Art Museum. Taylor’s all-cotton art has won several awards — including two best of shows — at international quilt festivals in recent years.

The 47-year-old Steamboat Springs resident puts extensive, painstaking work into hand-stitching and selecting fabric for his quilts, which often are inspired by photographs. He said an image captured by local photographer Jackie Owen inspired his quilt featuring a rooster. That quilt won best in show at the 2008 International Quilt Festival in Chicago. Taylor also won a best in show at the 2007 version of that festival, for a quilt featuring a hummingbird.

He said the constant travel involved in his career as a quilt artist necessitated extensive preparation for this summer’s show.

“I’ve been planning for three years what to bring back. All my work is always out, somewhere,” Taylor said. “My rooster, he lives in France. I just had an exhibit there.”

A quilt is defined as three layers stitched together, Taylor said. The exhibition will display 20 of the pieces Taylor has created in his 10 years as a serious quilt artist.

Rod Hanna, the museum’s vice president and public relations director, noted that the intent of the show is not to sell the art, but rather to give the artist a venue to showcase his cumulative work.

Taylor and Hanna were at the museum Wednesday morning as quilts were hung for the exhibit. Also on hand was Lilo Bowman, of www.thequiltshow.com, a site about all things quilt-related. A show about Taylor aired on the site in spring 2009, Bowman said. She plans to create an article and slide show about this summer’s show and its Steamboat location. Bowman said the site has more than 50,000 members across 97 countries.

Visitors to the exhibit should be sure to lean forward and look closely at Taylor’s quilts. The intricacies of the stitching and multicolored threads indicate hours upon hours of careful attention to detail.

Taylor said he uses a broad array of thread colors in an effort to reflect reality. The exhibition includes a quilt that uses tan, blue and purple thread in a portrayal of snow, for example.

“Snow is not just white,” Taylor said. “The world is made up of lots of colors.”

20_aawmarapr_01.jpg"Local Quilter Sews Up Worldwide Contest"

Author: Sherrie Norris
Source: All About Women www.aawmag.com

Just before Christmas, Lansing resident Joan Piercy received what she, at first, thought was just another telemarketing call from two people posing as celebrities. Before the call ended, however, Piercy had learned that her name had been randomly selected from a pool of 50,000 entries as the winner of a worldwide contest. And, her callers were indeed well known personalities.

Her prize? A state-of-the-art Bernina 820 sewing machine valued at $7,499 provided by The Quilt Show. Additionally, Piercy was awarded $500 worth of thread from Superior Threads and free quilting lessons from Sew Original in Boone.

With personal notification coming from The Quilt Show’s hosts Alex Anderson, formerly of HGTV's Simply Quilts, and Ricky Tims, who is a quilt teacher, author, and entertainer, Piercy was in a mild state of shock and still excited a month later when claiming her prize in Boone.

Making the official presentation at Sew Original was Ruth Goodwin, the show’s marketing director, who after learning that Piercy’s Lansing was not in Michigan, made the relatively short drive from her Raleigh office to Sew Original, the closest Bernina dealer.

It all began nearly three years ago when Anderson and Tims combined their comprehensive skills to bring to the World Wide Web “the richest, most diverse Web site for quilters ever created and the opportunity for them to watch a fully produced Web ‘TV’ show.”

The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims is the only quilt show series recorded live before a studio audience and can be seen exclusively on www.TheQuiltShow.com.

Featuring the quilting industry’s top teachers and artists, “The Quilt Show” is filmed in Boulder, Co at Daylight Productions Studios. All-new episodes premier every two weeks and are available on-demand with unlimited access during their run.

As the world’s first full-service interactive online video/Web magazine created just for quilters worldwide, the show is the first quilting series to be shot in front of a live audience and features instruction, entertainment and insights into the lifestyles of well known quilt personalities. The ever-evolving Web site offers its members a multitude of opportunities including a daily blog, forum chat rooms and the world's largest online gallery that allows viewers to locate quilts all over the world.

Similar to paying for a magazine, subscribers have immediate access to the latest shows and information that is upgraded daily.

In the show’s early days, Anderson and Tims decided that when their membership reached 50,000, they would give away a sewing machine, with each member a potential winner.

20_bernina_tqs_50000_winner_023.jpgAccording to Goodwin, during the recent presentation, their goal was met in mid-December and all subscribers’ names were placed in a random, computer-generated drawing.

Ironically, Joan Piercy, an experienced seamstress/quilter and proud mother of three, grandmother of seven, joined the show on its third day and could not be happier.

“I still can’t believe this,” she said. As a long-time owner of a Bernina 440 sewing machine, she admitted, “I’ve never had anything like this one before.”

Goodwin came to Sew Original in Boone to present Piercy with her prize and was joined by the shop’s co-owner Melinda Rose,  store patrons and local media.

Piercy is no stranger to Sew Original, a full service Bernina dealership and quilt shop, which is now the closest one to her home.

“I always enjoy coming over here and getting the supplies I need. They are so nice to me and make all of us feel welcome.”

Rose admitted that she and her business partner, Shirley Bailey, try to meet the needs of all their customers. “We want it to always be a place they enjoy coming to. We are proud to be a part of this celebration for Joan.”

Rose and Goodwin say the Bernina 820 is top of the line and offers high-performance features for quilters as well as fashion designers, fiber artists and crafters. It has been described as “the only, luxury, high-performance sewing and embroidery system in the world, offering the most sewing and embroidery space, unbeatable speeds, and the most advanced ergonomics of any home sewing machine.”

"Quantum Quilting: Gramma's Craft Goes Galactic" by Meryl Ann Butler gives a unique view of the 2009 Long Beach Quilt Festival, and starts off with a "shout-out" to Ricky Tims.

"As the quilts on exhibit at the Long Beach Convention Center testified, these women are fine artists with cloth.

Lest I be accused of female chauvinism, I must disclose that there are a few guy quilters, including the amazing Ricky Tims (www.rickytims.com), co-host with Alex Anderson of The Quilt Show with Alex and Ricky (www.thequiltshow.com)..."
