3015_daphnes_escape.jpgThe Oregon State Fair is going to have an installation of original art quilts during its run from August 27-September 6, 2010. The idea behind the exhibit was for quilters to express their creative impression of a tree in fiber. There will be many quilted trees through which the visitor can wander as if walking through A Quilted Forest. Each piece is approximately 20 inches wide by 8 feet tall. The trees have been imagined literally, figuratively, and in many other ways. Quilters represented include Jean Wells Keenan, June Jaeger, Vivienne Moore, Maureen Erhardt and more.

The exhibit is being held in the Americraft Building in the Creative Living Department at the Oregon State Fair during regular fair hours. A Quilted Forest is sponsored by Greenbaum's Quilted Forest, a 110-year-old, third generation, Salem family business.

For more information, contact Sylvia Dorney at Greenbaum's Quilted Forest, Sylvia@quiltedforest.com, or Neva Hutchinson, Oregon State Fair, neva.hutchinson@state.or.us.

With all this talk about Ricky getting his sewing room organized, TQS thought it would be a great idea to see what its members do to keep their sewing rooms in tip-top shape.  What system do you use for storing your fabrics, your thread, your notions?  Have you hit about a great way to keep the interfacing from getting wrinkled?  Where is your ironing board, tucked away, or always out?  We've set up a Show & Tell  area for you to share your ideas and pictures.  Click on Getting Organized and then Submit Entry.  We want to peek into the room where you create.

I am back on track working on the TQS quilt (I see a light at the end of the tunnel) - My question is - how long can a person reasonably machine quilt in one sitting?

Thanks for playing everyone! Tallying the votes that were cast here and on Facebook etc, Wolley won by a narrow margin. However, I trumped it with Sting because so many comments from my British friends indicated that "wally" was a derogatory term for a real nerd or dork. So, Sting it is. Sting, my scooter, not a motorcycle, is so small it does not have to be licensed, so the full leathers in the photo is total overkill .

Sting is my favorite male singer. Sting is a very special dagger in one of my favorite books, Lord of the Rings. And now Sting is a scooter that will whiz along as long as I don't wind the rubber band up too tight.

Do you have trouble naming things? What do you think makes a good name?

Lorna Westfall - aka Lorna1021 - is our latest member spotlight.  Linda has traveled the world as a member of the US Air Force and is also a physician.  She has toted her sewing supplies with her, sometimes in lieu of more domestic needs, in order to keep up with her quilting passion.  Lorna has lived a fascinating life and is sharing it with TQS.  You can find her full interview in the Features section under Articles.   For now, enjoy this brief glimpse into the life of a woman on the go.

Patsy Thompson has been  teaching wonderful ways to tackle your machine quilting. In this lesson she discusses a lovely plume design that can be manipulated to fit many areas of your background

Patsy also discusses how to quilt around heavy embellishments and needle selection.  Looking forward, in Patsy's next lesson you'll find out how to quilt that outer border.
