This is one of the largest quilts created by Terrie Hancock, generally considered one of the first artists to work in mixed media and embellishment  In the late 1980s she began painting on canvas. Terrie then cut up the canvas and worked them into quilts.  The quilt measures 123" x 99" and was quilted by Sue Rule in 1985.  It is made of cottons and cotton blends, is hand appliqued and machine pieced, reverse appliqued, embroidered, and uses beadwork and other embellishment.  It is in the collection of the International Quilt Study Center.

Me and my buddy, Ami, were talking yesterday and we're just not sure if we should let Ricky be the MVP of the Alzhiemer's Art Quilt Iniatiative World Series Quilt Challenge.  After all, he was the cover boy of the Houston Chronicle on Friday.  How many accolades does one man need?

So, TQS, get out there and ROOT for anyone, but Ricky.  Place a bid on anyone's quilt, but Ricky's. Buy a pair of ultra-light earrings, just not Ricky's.  Give someone else a chance to shine.

Beloved quilt teacher, author, and designer Laura Nownes comes to Alex's hometown, to show a selection of her charming quilts AND to share her simple, two-pin technique for stitching a Y-seam, a must for constructing the Tumbling Blocks block. Laura also talks about her long-time collaboration with quilter and friend, Diana McClun, including the story behind their best-selling, quilt-library staple, Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!! As an added bonus, Alex and Ricky draw upon the Alden Lane Nursery location to inspire you with tips on color and composition for quilts. Don't miss it!

Another great turn out at the TQS member meet and greet on Saturday.  Captain John and Alex joined the crew and even Paula Nadelstern and Meg Cox can be seen lurking in the background.  Raise your hand if you were there!

In 2009 Elizabeth Phillips had the idea for an online quilt block challenge. Her business partner, Sharon Pederson, cheered her on. The challenge was to design a block using only a blossom, a leaf, and a circle. Any sizes of the shapes were allowed as well as 1/4" stem. The fabrics were supplied by Island Batik and Electric Quilt hosted the challenge on their website.

The purpose of the challenge was to raise money to find a cure for Alzheimer's. Before long, many companies became proud supporters of the cause. When the challenged ended, more than 850 Rose of Sharon blocks had been entered from 11 countries. Alex and Ricky had the tough task of choosing only 12 winners.

The Roses of Remembrance quilt made by Sharon contains the winning blocks. To learn more about the battle against Alzheimer's, please visit www.alzquilts.org.

Since Alex is all about the American Quilt League for the World Series Quilt Challenge, Ricky thinks the National Quilt League needs a little love too.  Ricky's team has a great group of ladies, including one of his many quilting friends, Caryl Bryer Fallert; and they've also donated their beautiful quilts to the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative for the World Series Quilt Challenge Auction going on now through November 10.

Feather Flower #2

You can bid on Caryl's stunning quilt and own a little bit of history from one of quilting's master artists.  And don't worry, if you can't affort to bid on a quilt, you can root for any member of the World Series Quilt Challenge. ROOT for YOUR FAVORITES here.  You only need $1 to ROOT and help stamp out this horrible disease.

Caryl's Quilt - Feather Flower #2 - This quilt is the second in a series of original, abstract, floral forms that borrow design elements from my "Feather Study" series of quilts. All of the "solid" fabrics are from my "Gradations" collection for Benartex, and the green print is from my "Multi-Tye-Dye" collection for Benartex.

RickyThe Houston Chronicle has defined the rock stars of the quilting world.  According to the Chronicle, "The rock stars of the world are artists who create quilts that hang on walls, not beds. They make a name for themselves by combining excellence and innovation, often winning big prizes such as the best of show award bestowed in Houston annually by the International Quilt Association.

Most also garner attention by teaching internationally, writing books, publishing magazines or hosting TV shows.

"Most of the rock stars of quilting are fine artists, and each of us has our own style," said Caryl Bryer Fallert."
