Create a Hand Therapy Mitt for use if your hands have problems like arthritis, joint pain, or just get tired (from lots and lots of sewing!). It can be used either to cool or warm tired, aching hands, and smells wonderfully of healing lavender.

Barbara Schneider at WeAllSew.com has a tutorial to help you make your own mitt.

Meet "Gertie" the Green Bear by Sue Nickels

Sue writes,

"Gertie is made from hand dyed wool and polyester fill. She has a pretty vest that is machine appliquéd with a sweet design from my first machine applique book, which is now out of print. The pattern is reduced 50%. I used 100% cotton fabric and threads. The vest has three scallops to add a bit of interest and is an edge treatment that I have used on my quilts and teach in classes. She has a “Bear Collar” that is free motion machine quilted with an original feather design. To complete her ensemble, she has a small floral head piece. She represents the quilts I make and the techniques I teach.

I hope my sweet little green bear “Gertie” finds a good home. She is proud to be part of this project to raise money and awareness for finding a cure for rare childhood diseases."

Sue emphasizes the best quality workmanship, never compromising quality for speed!

While at Quilters Take Manhattan, Mark Lipinski was interviewed by Marie Bostwick for the Quilt Alliance's Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories project.  These interviews usually focus on the quilt being discussed, which in this case was Mark's very first quilt, but Mark, being Mark, has the crowd roaring with one particularly irreverent comment.  He then moves on to giving a very honest answer to the question of how he handles fear and risk when it comes to creating art.

Star Members can watch Mark in Show 1813: Quilts of Valor and Intent.

In this show, Mark tells you about his Quilts of Valor experience, and recounts how he met the Vietnam Vet whose remembrance bracelet he wore in the ‘70s. Listen as he tells about some special jobs he has had in his past. He also candidly talks about his loss of enthusiasm for quilting, and how he gained back the joy via a more mindful perspective. Mark also shows you a fun way to label your quilts in the form of a letter and you'll will want to hear about his current work in progress—legacy quilt blocks.

Meet "Mr. Pineapple" by Gyleen Fitzgerald

Gyleen writes,

"When asked to make a RARE Science Bear that represented me as a quilt artist, I knew it had to be a pineapple bear. Since the launch of Pineapple Tool by Gyleen in 2005, I’ve been known for making and teaching Trash to Treasure Pineapple Quilts. True to the pineapple concept I upcycled the materials. The embroidered pineapple on the center square was cut from a linen bread cloth. I used Peppered Shot Cottons strips and leftovers to complete the pineapple block and to color block my bear. The ribbon was from a lovely gift I received last year. I wanted to infuse as much color and playfulness into the bear as possible. Mr. Pineapple makes me smile. You’re going to love him, bid high."

Meet "Bojagi Bear" by Youngmin Lee

She writes,

"Bojagi, Korean wrapping cloth, carries wishes for the well-being and happiness of its recipients. I appreciate the beauty that comes as a result from the long and slow process of hand stitching. As a Bojagi artist, I hope I can put my wishes and heartfelt thoughts on my RARE bear. Many pieces of small fabrics and many different stitches all carry good wishes and this bear can comfort whoever receives it. I included three bat figures on the belly of the bear as bats are symbols of happiness."

What are you going to do on the back of your Rajah Revisited quilt? Brenda Dean (she had the pattern prior to release to TQS.) chose to make her back as interesting as her front. We thought it was amazing and you could use all of the historical tidbits we have been providing to do something similar.

Brenda wrote to Lilo,

I completed my quilt top some weeks ago and then set about making the backing for the quilt. I felt that the story had to be told and should form part of my quilt. I printed the fourteen panels of text that Lessa [our TQS BOM 2016 designer] forwarded to you onto printable fabric then tea dyed it to give it an antique look. The panels are bordered with some Jinny Beyer border fabric and I have used antique looking tone on tone for the rest of the background.

I created the wording on the panels in my own style using information from many sources. My main source was the book 'Patchwork Prisoners' by Trudy Cowley & Dianne Snowden from Research Tasmania along with details of female prisoners listed on their website. I contacted them before making the quilt back and they gave me permission to use the information.
