Fancy Shawl Dancer was created by Linda C. Anderson and won 3rd Place: Art Pictorial at Road to California 2015. It measures 41" x 57" and was completed in 2014.
Artist statement: "Having seen local Indians dance with this eye-stopping dress and mesmerizing movement reflecting a butterfly, I knew I had to capture that feeling and motion. The dark sky makes me think of dream catchers in the Southwest, as well as Starry Night by Van Gogh. I used 100% cotton and hand painted all the fabric used. I machine stitched the raw-edged appliqué."
Taking inspiration from a photo she took of a bullfrog in her certified wildlife habitat, i.e. her backyard, Carol Morrissey's Kevin is a painted wholecloth quilt which also includes some ink. It is a recent work of Carol's that breaks from her Exaggerated Pointillism series, showing her interest has not faded from different types of quilt making.
We continue our selection of quilts exhibited in 2019 at the Houston International Quilt Festival as part of their 45th Anniversary, the Sapphire Anniversary. The Sapphire Celebration exhibit is described as:
"Quilters have long used the color blue to symbolize trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Sapphire is also the chosen gem to celebrate 45th anniversaries—which International Quilt Festival is doing this year (2019)! These new and antique blue and white quilts will be suspended from the ceiling in a spectacular and unforgettable display."
To be a part of the exhibit, quilts had to fit the following criteria:
Entries may be Traditional, Modern or Art.
Entries must have been made between 1974 and 2019.
The minimum size is 50” x 50”
Please enjoy the thirty-ninth quilt from the exhibition by Lori DeJarnatt and quilted by Kathy McCarty.
Kathy McNeil's (Show 1802) Celtic Fox"symbolizes a need to think quickly, to employ cleverness and wisdom." The cunningness of the fox, which "comes from "kenning" meaning to know and understand" is represented beautifully in Kathy's hand appliqué and machine embroidery. Winning First Place in the Art-Whimsical category at Houston 2017, this is one dashing fox.
Celtic Fox by Kathy McNeil of Tulalip, Washingston won First Place in the Art-Whimsical category at Houston 2017.
It's time for fun. Pick things about yourself and get them represented on your project. Work on the eyes, mouth, nose, and ears. The hair can be really fun. No judgment here. Try something out and then change it. This is play. You remember "play", right?
Join Alex LIVE on Wednesday November 11, 2020 @ 10am PST, 1pm EST, and 6pm London time. All classes are recorded so they can be viewed later.
Alex began the eagle on this quilt, Made in America, in a Charlotte Warr Andersen class at Asilomar. She wanted to do the eagle rather than the face of a person. She didn't finish it until a few years later when the concept for the design came into focus. (Unfortunately, no pattern is available.)
Here's a reminder that excellence matters.Watching Stephen Curry shoot a basketball or Sherry Reynolds create perfect points inspires us to do better ourselves. Enjoy.
Sherry's quilt, America, Let It Shine, has won many awards including Best of Show Houston 2012, Best Machine Workmanship Award at the 2012 Lancaster AQS Quilt Show & Contest, Viewer's Choice at Road to California 2012, Best of Show PIQF 2011, and Best of Show Machine Quilters Exposition 2011.
It is now the home stretch for the 2020 BOM Afternoon Delight, and since we released the Month 12 pattern early, Barbara Black has some helpful tips for the last four appliqué blocks so that you can get to the layout process.
It's always a good idea to check out Barbara's tips as they can usually be applied to your everyday quilting as well as the BOM.
