A wonderful traditional appliqué design will surprise you when you get up close. Judy Mathieson was the featured artist at Quilting in the Garden in 2012. Her quilts looked fantastic up in the 400-year-old oaks and in front of the garden center. This quilt was a big favorite and a delight to all who stepped just a little closer (scroll down)...
Have you put any surprises in your quilts?

What happened? The fire swept through and missed Ricky's house. Here's the latest update from Ricky:
WILDFIRE UPDATE: Sunday morning 7/8/2018
Today I might actually get in to see first hand how the fire swept through our Yellowstone Creek Ranch development destroying almost everything in its path and choosing to spare little. This photo shows just how vast the fire was there and how our house (the Rookery) is standing as an island in a sea of Armageddon. Our parcel is named Autumn Rock for the large outcropping you see on our parcel just past the Rookery.
There is a little road the leads down there as well. That is where our tiny log cabin and tipi were.
The greater mystery remains that the vegetation near the house also did not burn.
The fire is now over 107,000 acres. It is 55% contained. It has caused a tremendous loss of houses in an area called Paradise Acres and continues to threaten other areas.
Every quilter has their own story to tell. Sometimes we forget that there is life outside of quilting. We have three fun facts that you might not know about Mark Sherman and you can learn more about him in Show 2301: Luminous Stained Glass Quilts.
1 - He is an accomplished pianist and organist (just like Ricky).
2 - He is a GIA gemologist certified in pearls with a specialty in natural pearls.
3 - He is fluent in Spanish as a result of serving in the US Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic.
Mark created this quilt in memory of his Dad (who his kids called Poppy). His two kids are in the quilt as butterflies and Mark is in the quilt as a frog. He told his kids as a joke, "if you don't behave, I'm going to eat you..."

Here's a blog post from the past regarding the quilt.
Fresh from the 2013 AQS QuiltWeek - Paducah is Poppy's Rainbow by Mark L. Sherman winner of 1st Place, Large Wall Quilts: Longarm/Midarm Machine Quilted. Mark spent many months working on the turned edge appliques, quilting and fills. He even added a few Swarovski crystals for highlights. Poppy's Rainbow also took Best of Show at the World Quilt Show - Florida IV last November.
Captain John thought he had some idea of how "Flower Garden" by Tadako Nagasawa was put together. Turns out he was wrong. How do you think it was put together?
Take a close look at how this quilt was put together.
Amazingly, Ricky's house was spared from the Spring Creek fire where over 105,000 acres were burned. He'd like to thank everyone who sent their support, well wishes, and prayers.
Watch the amazing video below the photo to see the discovery of the house after the fire went through the area.
