Tara Faughnan wanted the focus of her quilt, The Spaces in Between, to be between the snowball blocks, not the blocks themselves. It forces the viewer to take a look at the other shapes that are formed as the blocks overlap and separate.

The Spaces in Between by Tara Faughnan of Oakland, CA was featured in the Improvisation category, sponsored by Gotham Quilts, at QuiltCon 2020.

I love the colors in this quilt, the spaces in between add a touch to the quilt.

This quilt is absolutely beautiful! It inspires me tremendously. The spaces in between pop. I LOVE it!!!

It has a very retro and modern look. Who knew a snowball could be so exciting

I agree it makes your eyes go straight to the snowballs. The spaces in between not large enough to draw you in

Interesting experiment, but I think the use of value defeats her purpose. Those light snowballs are always going to grab the viewer's focus, while the dark spaces between recede. The spaces come forward in just a few small areas, and only if you look for them.
On the bright side, this quilt shows a lot of skill, and I'm intrigued by the use of hand quilting. It works nicely with the liberated piecing style of the blocks.

There is a lot of skill in this quilt, but I find myself focussing on the center of the snowball blocks due to their coloration. Not a fan.
