The Whale by Candy S. Stiffler, of Trappe, MD, was featured in the Small Quilts category at QuiltCon 2020. It was inspired by Charlie Harper, whose work she had never seen before until her friend brought a book of his work to a guild meeting. She was hooked and created her own interpretation of Harper's "whale".

I have been a fan of Charlie Harper for a very long time. His work is so graphic and perhaps even modern so I am not sure why I am drawn to it. Love the idea of doing a quilt piece with a close up of one of his works. Thanks for showing this.

Gives new meaning to 'smile'.

I've become a fan of Charlie Harper too. Looking through some of his work, it is familiar from my earlier years.

I made something similar, the closeup of a whale's eye and part of its mouth, inspired by a kids' cartoon. No one in the guild knew what it was (the challenge was fish blocks), so I added lots of eyelashes.... :-*

Quite graphic and bold....but as many whales do not have teeth...especia lly big scary ones, I think she should have named this piece "SHARK!" :)

Candy’s quilt shop, Quilt Vine, is always fun! She is very creative and always coming up with new patterns and projects. I’m so glad to see her recognized on such a public and prestigious forum. Go, Candy!
