September's Birthstone Block by MJ Kinman is Sapphire.
Sapphire is said to represent purity of the soul. In the Middle Ages, it was worn by priests as protection from temptation, and warriors presented their young wives with sapphire necklaces so they would remain faithful. It was believed that the stone’s color would darken if worn by an unworthy person.
Sapphires were also once believed to be protection against snakes. It was believed that if poisonous reptiles or spiders were placed in a container containing the stone, the creatures would immediately die. In the 13th century, the French believed that sapphire transformed stupidity to wisdom and irritability to good humor.
September's Sapphire Birthstone Pattern makes a 17" x 17" block to either be used alone, in a project, or combined with other birthstone blocks into a birthstone quilt.
