We found Chizuko Ito's Song of Early Spring in the Merit Quilting Hand exhibit at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2018. While she says she used a traditional pattern, we felt that the quilt had a striking modern quality to it which was enhanced by the extraordinary Sashiko style of quilting.

This is a perfect example of Modern Quilting. The hand quilting is a real enhancement. Just wonderful!

it is a pleasure to see a modern quilt with such a traditional way of quilting. A new way maybe?

Hats off to hand quilting of this caliber.

I love this quilt and especially the sashimi quilting.

That quilt is perfection. I didn't have to look to see where it came from. Japanese quilters are consistently the best.

It breaks down into what is basically a traditional drunkards path, but the fabrics choices and setting put it squarely in the modern (minimalist) category. How about discussing Modern vrs. Contemporary?
It's a wonderful quilt and a conundrum like this question is what makes quilting and quilters endlessly interesting.
