Carolyn Ducey is Curator of Collections at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She oversees new acquisitions and ongoing care of the museum’s collection. In this video she discusses the Intarsia technique, which is used to create the quilts in the War & Pieced: The Annette Gero Collection of Quilts from Military Fabrics exhibit.

If the design is the same on the front and the back, does that mean these aren't actually quilts (i.e., three layers stitched together), and are in fact blankets?

I saw this show last year in New York City at Folk Art Museum, the workmanship and details on these quilts are magnificent.
