Instead of glue, I've used fusible web (MistyFuse) to affix some of my art quilts to stretched canvas. I've also painted skies on the canvas and, having made a foreground separately (quilted and/or needle-felted), I've attached that to the canvas using matte gel medium. I've then put those pieces into 'floater' frames. :-) The photo shows "Autumn Skies", quilted first, then wrapped around canvas and framed.
