Sarah Contos Presents "The Long Kiss Goodbye" was chosen to win the inaugural $100,000 Ramsay Art Prize, Australia's richest prize for young contemporary artists. It was described by one of the judges as celebrating women “in all their glory with fireworks, sequins and PVC”. The quilt is enormous measuring in at approximately 20' x 10' (yes feet).

This is not a pleasing piece of art. In my opinion - ugly. I can have my opinion even if it’s negative.

Great to see that fabric art is now being recognised as a place in art, the issue of what is a quilt or if it is suitable as a bed quilt is a different question. Many of the quilts I saw displayed at a recent visit to the Quilt Museum in Padukah would not have been suitable to place on a bed or sleep under.
We should be proud that firstly a woman won the prize and secondly that the prize was worth winning and then that it was a quilt!

I think that they key word in the article is that it's an "ART" prize in an "ART" competition, not in a quilt show. It is an amazing piece of art and we quilters should be giving accolades, not downplaying it's "quilt" properties. I love this piece of art and wish that I could see it in real life to study all the work that has gone into it, even if some of it is printed (which many quilt artists do now - even me, and I'm not quite a quilt artist)

I think the key word in the article is that it's an "Art" prize - not a quilt prize, so the fact that an art quilt won and such a special one at that should only produce accolades. Everyone has different tastes - just because one person doesn't like it doesn't make it worthless. I personally think it's amazing and would love to see it in real life to study all the work that has gone into it.

The world is full of choices. My words are not harsh nor hateful. I simply have used my freedom of speech to ad my opinion, which is what this "add comment" section is for. $100,000.00 is a fortune to me and would be to other causes as well.

lag... such harsh words. Not all quilts are bed quilts. You need to get updated with the quilt world. Don't you watch the shows? This young artist can use the money for good and to create more art for the world to see instead of hate. To see the quilt click the link above the photo.

"...the work was chosen from among 21 finalists in Australia’s richest prize for young contemporary artists, which was launched earlier this year by the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) and is supported by philanthropist organisation the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation." It just happens to be an art quilt.

Was the judge a man? I agree this is art, but it is not a quilt. This is a picture of pictures.
A quilt is made with love to sleep under.
Very poor taste. $100.000.00... do you not have better things to spend this money on? Like feed the hungry?
Comfort the sick. Support the Caregivers. Support the orphans. Support single parents. Care for the grieving. Fix a road. Help wildlife.
