Why is it Called "Gypsy Wife?"

Catherine Mosely made her version of the "Gypsy Wife" quilt for QuiltCon 2015. She had the opportunity of meeting with the designer, Jen Kingwell while she was there. The Quilt Alliance (Go Tell It At The Quilt Show) learns about Catherine's quilt and then catches up with the designer to find out why it's called "Gypsy Wife."

In my background Gypsy is considered a derogatory term. Roma is the respectable name.

I was at a luncheon yesterday and our speaker was Gypsy Rrrrrosa. She is not a real Gypsy but has done her research. Gypsy's originated in India and their leader is called a Chief. Could be a man or a woman. A woman will often braid her hair and hide cash in the braids. When she passes the braids are cut off and given to the oldest daughter. There are approx. 3 million Gypsies in the world. Some countries welcome them such as Spain. Others, not so much. Rumors are not true. They do not steal young children. Rrrrrosa says they have enough children of their own to feed. Don't want yours. She was funny and came dressed appropriately with many layers of skirts down to her ankles. She says showing off legs of women is not done. Very interesting. Now, I want to make this quilt!

I believe you hit the nail on the head. I came to this site with that very question. Being a Quilter and of Gypsy heritage, I too wanted to know where the name came from.

Loved the quilt! I could imagine a quilter wandering from place to place gathering scraps of fabric for blocks. finally deciding to stitch them all together to tell the tale of her travels with each block having a special story of where the scraps came from or the person who shared their stash.

Both quilts deliver striking impact! Bought the pattern the minute I saw Jen's original and have been gathering fabrics for it in anticipation of a winter (US) start. These are totally inspiring!
