"Quilters do accumulate large stashes of fabric throughout their lifetime and they feel guilty about it." - Shamara Elkins, Second Chance Fabrics

Shamara has created a new kind of fabric store to help quilters with their guilt. Customers can drop off fabric from their stash and receive cash or store credit. Her store now has quite a collection of "vintage" fabrics with prices ranging from $2.99 to 6.99 per yard.  They also sell new fabrics as well.

Nobody is saying that anyone SHOULD feel guilty about it. The shop owner simply says there are quilters who accumulate large stashes of fabric and they feel guilty about it. She didn't say ALL quilters feel guilty about it, and she didn't say WHY anyone would feel guilty about it. I had an enormous stash of fabric and I've moved it cross country three times. Two years ago I stopped buying fabric and vowed to use what I have. Because, yes, I DID, in fact, feel guilty about it. I not only spent money on the fabric and wasn't using it, but I was buying more for projects instead of using what I had. Then I paid money to move it, and more money to store it. Money I could have used for something else. If other quilters don't feel guilty about it, hey that's wonderful, but that's not everyone, and there's a definite reason this shop exists, and thrives.

I agree with Susan. There is no reason to feel guilty unless it is because you haven't been able to use it all yet. I do think this is a cool way to shop for that very unique piece of fabric that you just can't find in current fabric shops. I would love to have one near to shop and dream up all sorts of projects to make and maybe even create that very special quilt that I hadn't even imagined yet.

Guilty? Really? We make beautiful quilts for family members and friends and many quilts for various charities. My husband spends far more on golf than I do on quilting, and I don't think he feels a bit guilty about it.

What an absolutely cool idea! Like a second hand book store. Wish there were one in my area.
