Time to hang up some of your old "Mom" jeans? Not really happy with that pair of pink jeans? Why not make this cute jeans quilt? Amy Johnson at Andrea's Notebook has a great way to put those old jeans to use and it's pretty cute to boot!

This tutorial (to make an upcycled jeans quilt) shows the seams being pressed open and then quilted "stitch in the ditch". This is not a wise combination, as any experienced quilter will know, as there will be almost no connection between the quilt top and the other layers. It certainly wouldn't be strong enough to use as a picnic blanket. The quilting MUST go through at least one layer of the quilt top fabric, if not across seams, and for a project like this there probably needs to be more quilting than suggested.
