1815_gallery_1.jpgJennifer Rounds of See How We Sew has been doing a short series of posts on African fabric with her friend Paula Benjaminson who lives in Libreville, Gabon. Paula is an active member of SAQA and the wife of the ambassador of Gabon.

Paula sent Jennifer wonderful information and photos about African fabrics, as well as her quilting life in Africa.  They had so much fun working together that they decided to share some African-style quilts online.  And so, a 30-day online exhibition was born.

To see the original posts between Jennifer and Paula and learn more about the exhibit, click here and here.

2012 marks the 25th anniversary of The AIDS Memorial Quilt and 30 years of life with AIDS. The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles is proud and excited to announce that the AIDS Quilt Interactive: Touching 1.3 Million Square Feet will be on view as part of their 2nd International TECHstyle Art Biennial, running  August 7 - October 14, 2012.

The AIDS Quilt Interactive is a 42-inch interactive touchscreen tabletop that allows users to search through and examine detailed individual images from the 1.3 million square feet of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

The 2nd International TECHstyle Art Biennial is a juried exhibition, focusing on new ways in which contemporary fiber artists are using technology as a part of their artistic process or within the content of their work. Piecing together an experience that is both historical and contemporary — TECHstyle exposes and explores the technological tensions and provocative imagery within the realm of fiber, cloth, and fashion. Curated by Deborah Corsini, this exhibit also runs August 7 - October 14, 2012.

The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) just received their 12,000th quilt! This little beauty was made by someone pretty famous in the quilting community. Can you guess who it was?

It was made by Charlotte Warr Andersen. Charlotte is most recognized for her realistic applique portraits. She has purchased four Priority: Alzheimer's Quilts made by supporters of the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative. They hang in her sewing room.

The 9" x 12" landscape represents another milestone for the all-volunteer charity dedicated to raising awareness and funding research through art.  And, you can own it!

"Outside Juneau, AK 2012" is based on a photograph Charlotte  took on a trip to Alaska and will be available for purchase in the AAQI's October online auction at http://www.alzquilts.org/quiltauction.html.

Here's more good news, Charlotte is coming to TQS in Series 12, where she will be hanging out at a Dude Ranch with Alex, Ricky and Georgia Bonesteel.

What's the surprise? (Scroll Down for closeups).  From far away Thom Atkins' quilts are quite striking, but wait until you see them close up!  Almost every little bit is embellished in some way.  Here in Thom's quilt, My Father's Shadow, every tree and leaf is a bead or button.

To see more of Thom's amazing work, which was featured at Quilting in the Garden, watch the slideshow below the photos.

To learn more about Tom, visit his website.  Tom also has a new book, Beading Artistry for Quilts from C&T Publishing, click here to order.

A wonderful traditional applique design will surprise you when you get up close. Judy Mathieson was the featured artist at Quilting in the Garden in Livermore, California.  Her quilts looked fantastic up in the 400 year old oaks and in front of the Garden Center.  (More from the show coming soon.)

This quilt was a big favorite and a delight to all who stepped just a little closer (scroll down)........

Have you put any surprises in your quilts?

Have you quilted your TQS BOM - Ruffled Roses? Here's a finished quilt to inspire you created by Lynn Droege and quilted by Lisa Sipes. Lynn named the quilted McTangerine Roses after Lisa's Facebook name, McLisa Tangerine Starfish Sipes. (To learn more about Lisa, click here.)

Lisa says about the quilting, "I went into it with the "no plan plan" and just made it up as I went, bit by bit. But I will say I think my favorite part is the setting triangles around the center medallion! The triple stitch in combination with the gradated coloring of the fabric really looks groovy! :)"
