This sashiko-stitched masterpiece from Hidemi Endo uses a wide variety of cotton stripes, solids, kasuri, and katazome that are indigo-dyed.  The sashiko stitches include chidori, koma, and matuba. The quilt was deigned by Keiko Morihiro and exhibited at IQF Houston 2013 where it won an Honorable Mention.

Here is a new way to see quilts. We are honoring male quilters this holiday season. Michael James is our Quilt Legend this year, but as with all of us, he is standing on the shoulders of those who came before.

One such quilter is Ernest Haight. The International Quilt Study Center and Museum had a wonderful exhibit telling his story. You can enjoy this exhibit yourself. Be sure to read the signs and look at the quilting (make sure to look close at the tumbling blocks quilt). Also, check out the fabrics from the dating of the quilts. Often the quilts show stitching declaring who the quilt was given to and who did the quilting.

Here's how to use the new system:

  1. Click the picture below to start
  2. Use the side arrows to go to the next page
  3. Want to zoom in? Just click on the picture and it will fill the screen
  4. Want to zoom in farther? Slide the slider at the top to get up very close.
  5. Then click the picture to go back to normal.
  6. It's that easy.
Do you like it?

Sharon Schamber Videos End December 15!

A big "thank you" to Sharon Schamber for allowing TQS fo feature two amazing machine-quilting videos that benefit both the quilter working on a domestic machine AND the longarm quilter.

You say you haven't watched them yet? There's still time, but you'd better hurry. You've got until December 15 to watch and learn.

You will want to keep these by your side after Dec 15. 6167_button_buy_sharons_dvds.png

The holidays are in the air as quilt artist, author, and fabric and quilt designer Amanda Murphy connects with Alex and Ricky in historic downtown Charleston, SC. Amanda demonstrates how to make a fast-and-fun tree skirt, complete with inverted-miters, points, and continuous binding. She also shares a quick-and-colorful Christmas quilt, with trees in three sizes, snowflake appliqués, and pompom trim. We finish with a tour of the day's location, The Old Exchange and Provost (built in 1767) which has played host to patriots, presidents . . . and pirates!

Episode 1312 Just in Time! Perfect Projects for the Holidays debuts on 12/9.

Another masterpiece from Takido Fusako, Crest of Tulip, was featured at IQF Houston 2013 as part of the Handmade exhibition. It was awarded Judge's Choice by Sandra Leichner.

This is not Takido Fusako's first TQS Zoom quilt, her quilt, Arrangement, has also been featured on our site.

Today's Zoom quilt is Four Square by Tim Nash of Houston Texas.  it was created using a longarm machine and was inspired by Linda V. Taylor's 2012 class at Quilt Festival, "Beginning Longarm Quilting."

Artist's Statement:  Originally intended as a practice piece for feathered borders, this project began with no planning and no design.  After finishing the top row of feathers, I spend a a month drawing different designs for the four quadrants and used many patterns and techniques learned at Linda Taylor's beginning longarm quilting class at the 2012 Quilt Festival.  To finish, I had to remember how I stitched the feathers, now hidden on the machine's take-up bar.

Pam shares another fascinating video: (The movie is in high-def and make take a moment to load.)

From her 11/19/2013 Blog:

Last night when I sat down to write I found the experiences of the day really hard to put into words But I'm giving it a go now.

We visited a local market in Samutsongkram about an hour out of Bangkok and then spent the rest of the day on the delta of the Gulf of Thailand which included a trip through the mangroves to feed the wild monkeys.
They were all re-visits which means we had done on the same trip a few years ago, but armed with new knowledge we were much better prepared.

The train market.
Passenger trains have passed through an incredibly busy market 8 times a day for almost 30 years…
Lily, our guide explained that the market is overflowing and there is no more room for vendors, so when some enterprising folk saw that the space by the train line was free, they gradually put their stalls right next to the line. As the train arrives,  the produce is lifted or rolled back like a well co-ordinated race team
the canopies are removed and the train passes  through.  Within a few minutes products are put back in place  and  the overhead canvas is unfurled, its an incredible sight. The train actually passes over the produce.... OK, I'm not going to buy any of it... but its the way it is....
