Two great new fall exhibits are opening Oct. 3 at the Texas Quilt Museum. "My Stars! A Constellation of Star Quilts, 1845-1993," and "Land of Enchantment: Art Quilts from New Mexico." The museum has been kind enough to offer our TQS member a sneak peek of both exhibits.
The Museum's consulting curator, Sandra Sider, of New York, curated "My Stars!" and noted, "Quilt makers in the United States were captivated by star quilts in the early 19th century. Their passion for working with these challenging, kaleidoscopic patterns continued into the 20th century, ranging from monumental Lone Star quilts to block quilts constructed in precise, repetitive grids that tested the skills of the most talented makers. We invite you to savor the explosions of color and texture in this exhibition, which might just leave you "starry eyed!"
Betty Busby, of New Mexico, curated "Land of Enchantment," which contains 14 quilts created by fiber artists from that state. All of the artists are also members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates. Many of the themes and images in their quilts, which include both representational and abstract art, are reflective of the diverse aspects of New Mexico.
The fall exhibits will run through Dec. 22, when the Museum will close for the holidays, reopening on January 9 with its winter exhibits.
The museum is located at 140 W Colorado St, La Grange, TX 78945. If you are going to IQF Houston, it is about 1 1/2 drive to the museum.
