Currently at the San Jose Museum of Quilt and Textiles is a wonderful exhibit by Linda Toeniskoetter, Out of Chaos. Linda says, "The creation myths of many ethnic groups and religions describe the world created from undifferentiated stuff, from chaos. It is this notion of building something organized and beautiful from a jumble that appeals to me when I think about quilting."
Out of Chaos showcases her novel approach to design and variation on traditional pieced blocks. These quirky geometric combinations of pattern create lively movement throughout the quilts, and the uneven edges are unusual, almost a bit unsettling. The quilts reflect a personal story of survival and show the power of artistic expression, innovation, and healing that results while creating a body of work. Behind the jewel-toned and dynamic chaos is a rich and intimate outpouring of unique work – “the building of a quilt lets me experience this process of creating balance as an example for the rest of my life,” she says. Toeniskoetter’s work has been shown nationally.
The exhibit runs through October 27, 2013.
