The Dragon is one of Karen's first competition quilts. She entered her first major quilt competition in the spring of 1991. The Dragon received a first place in one show and second place in another. It was truly the start of Karen designing her own quilts and entering many more shows.

Ann writes of her quilt, "I love tackling different subjects in my pictorial quilts. I’m particularly fond of the shapes of boats — the sleek, curved hulls designed to cut effortlessly through water. Rowboats are simple, elegant crafts. Powered by hand using oars, they seem to beckon to a slower, simpler time. This boat was partly swamped, having aged and fallen into disuse. But it was also filled with memories of times past…"

Ann writes, "Summer brings the most amazing flowers. One of my favorites are Sunflowers. They seem unlikely as blossoms, with enormous discs of seeds and vibrant petals. Their vibrancy seems to match the bright red gingham table cloths we used on picnics. It's as if they are summer’s smiles."

Ann writes, Curiosity is a trait we see among many members of the Animal Kingdom……and ducks are no exception. Drawn to the shiny and new, ducks will poke their bills in the darnest places. This lime green, blue and orange duck couldn’t stay put, deciding to poke at the corner of my quilt. Curious Duck indeed!
