If Carol Morrissey featured one grandchild in one of her quilts, you knew she was going to feature the others. In Kora, Carol presents another magnificent quilt in her Exaggerated Pointillism style, this time featuring her granddaughter. While Pointillism in the art world features dots of the same size and pure color, in Carol's style she utilizes different sized circles and whatever colors blend best to bring out the work's image.

Taking inspiration from a photo she took of a bullfrog in her certified wildlife habitat, i.e. her backyard, Carol Morrissey's Kevin is a painted wholecloth quilt which also includes some ink. It is a recent work of Carol's that breaks from her Exaggerated Pointillism series, showing her interest has not faded from different types of quilt making.

Our latest show doesn't just have the Exaggerated Pointillism stylings of Carol Morrissey, it also has a fabulous visit to the A Better World Exhibition featured at Houston in 2019. Co-curated by The Quilt Show mainstays Lyric Kinard (Show 2013) and Susan Brubaker Knapp (Show 901), The exhibit focused on inspiration and what people have done with their actions to make the world a better place. The exhibit featured a quilt by Alex titled Anchors Aweigh, made in tribute to her father Joe Sladky. Below is what Alex has to say about the quilt and the exhibit:

"I'm beyond thrilled that my art work has been accepted into "A Better World", an art quilt exhibit highlighting heroes in our world who have worked for the greater good. I chose my Dad, Joe Sladky.

You won’t find a monument with his name on Main Street, or a statue in the town square, but he’s a hero nonetheless. How else to describe a man who spent much of his 94 years in service to others, in ways both large and small? A lifetime sailor, he served his country honorably and proudly as a Navy Lt JG during World War II, eventually settling his young family in Northern California. There, his dedicated commitment to giving—often quietly, behind the scenes—helped to build his small town’s educational, medical, and humanitarian communities. From serving on the school board to playing Santa at the local Senior Center, he was always ready with a hand and a smile. His philosophy was simple: to provide a solid secure mooring; to teach, support and encourage; and then—when the moment was right—to let go for a smooth sail, guided by the stars.

A hero? Yes. But also an outstanding citizen, friend, husband, father . . .
my father:
Joseph F. Sladky (July 19, 1923 – August 12, 2017)"

In Charlotte's quilt, Fly Away Butterflies, the trees and butterflies are created with her special technique of needle felting and thread painting. The components are then free-motion appliquéd on to her quilt.

Inspired by one of her grandsons, Jake won first place in the Portraits category at the Houston International Quilt Festival. Beyond winning an award for her quilt, Carol is appreciative that her work is being recognized because of the emotional attachment she has to the subject of her art.

Based on a photo of her friend's kitten, Dot is probably the quilt in Carol Morrissey's Exaggerated Pointillism series with the most apropos name. The difficult part she says, as most painters and sketch artists would tell you, is getting the eyes just right. In this instance, Carol knocked it out of the park as Dot's eyes stare right back at you from any angle you look.
