I've been using this method for several years, only I use velcro to hold the plastic trays I use to the rods, that way I can remove them if I want.

This is a super idea!

Curtain rods like the ones you've used are also great for holding up the edges of your quilt -- you know how the weight of the clamps sometimes pulls them down? Just put a rod on each end of your table, running the rods under the clamp cords and over the front and back rollers. Keeps the clamps up and out of the way of your ruler base.
