Introducing the 2013 TQS Block of the Month designed by Sue Nickels and Pat Holly! It's called "TWO OF US" and was created by the two of them. The quilt measures 79" x 79" and was completed just in time for Houston.

TOPIC: Month 3 Arcs

Re: Month 3 Arcs 28 Mar 2013 20:06 #100077

I am glad it's working for you too Susan. I found I got the pieces done very quickly without pinning - not that it's a race, but it did mean I had time to do lots of other things this month. I am looking forward to seeing the instructions for the applique. But I am thinking of coming up with my own design for these centre pieces...maybe.

I tried with the pins and without. I was just nipping the point on a couple so, when I trimmed the next arcs, I cut just outside the black cutting line. I'm now sewing without pinning...4 stitches at a time and realigning the edges, per the video. I use sharp tweezers to hold the bottom layer in place so it doesn't get stretched. Very slowly, but still faster and more accurate than my pinning. I'm using a quarter inch foot and scant at that, since we are squaring up. This isn't as bad as I expected :D

Margo,

Thanks for the video on paper piecing the arcs while not sewing into the paper. The arcs came out great and sewing them to the center was easy (once the pinning was completed). I now have pinned 12 arcs to the two types of light turquoise shapes and then pin 8 final arcs and I am done for this month. I enjoy paper piecing arcs and find the results satisfying. Looking ahead to next month, I can see I have a lot more arcs to do.

Carol
36 total... :) I still have mine to finish, I doubt i'll find some time before Easter... oh well, I'll try to catch up, but... "this is not a race!" :D

Carol, you need to complete a total of 36 arc units for this month. Sixteen of the completed arcs will be set aside to be used in Month 4 on the four central applique blocks where we are instructed how to use Sue and Pat's technique for raw edge applique.

Sue, I cut out my corners from 5" squares. I made them slightly bigger - just like Margo did, so the arc was the right size but I left the two sides bigger so that I could square them up later with ease. I used a slightly smaller than the default stitch length - my default stitch length is 2.20 and I used 2.00. I definitely advise that you try a few samples first until you are confident that you can stitch without pulling the corner arcs because that will stretch it. Good luck. :D

No Susan. Please check pages 5 and 6 of your instructions. In month 3 you are to make 36 arc/quarter round units and assemble them into:

4 Arc Corner Blocks with an arc and background E

8 Arc Half Blocks with an arc and background F

and save the remaining 16 assembled arcs with quarter rounds to use in month 4. (Read on page 5 - third paragraph)

Dumb question time, are we just stitching 2 section 3-F's together for the 4 middle sqares, background for the flower applique?

I practiced a few times until I was pretty sure I could do it and that's what I did for the rest. A few ended up not right so I just ripped them out and did them again. I think the trick with this method is to hold the corner piece LIGHTLY on top and away from the bottom piece, and to focus on the bottom fabric always going straight under the 1/4" foot. If you pull the top fabric at all it goes wrong. That's how I got them done so quickly. If anyone is going to try that method, please, please practice it first until you are sure you are getting it right. :D

Rita, did you cut your quarter rounds exactly before you sewed? What stitch length did you use?
