This is for Lenore's question about leftover strips.

Yes, I had strips left over and posted about it maybe a month or so ago. I seem to recall someone else did also. I chalked it up to being more efficient with template layout. :)

Be sure to keep all leftovers - we may need them for applique, etc.

Sorry I can't help you with that, Lenore...as usual, I didn't follow the instructions.

Did anyone else follow the printed instructions? Did you have fabric left over???

OH! The other sashing strips! Yes....some of us paper pieced those using graph paper for the foundations.

The instructions are here: forum/two-of-us-2013/6107-month-2-sashing-strips

Margo, I did watch your video for month one and it was great! I finished it by paper piecing and they turned out nice. I cut triangle templates for month two, but want to paper piece the rectangles. I thought I had read that you did that. What size should the rectangles be? You are so helpful!

Racheljp, I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you asking what size to cut your fabric before you stitch it to the printed paper foundations?
If that's what you need to know, you will make your own templates for cutting out the fabric by adding 3/8" to each side of the triangles.
Have you watched the videos about paper piecing the month 1 units? Especially the one about using the Add A Quarter Ruler.

We need to do the same thing for month 2.

The month 3 video also shows how to create templates to use for cutting triangles of fabric to be paper pieced.

Denise, I did the same thing, but I did unsew a line or two. I used my good old Niagara and made the measurements what they should be, after careful cutting and stitching.

Yesterday morning -before work - I decided I had to try to piece a strip set. Cut them and stitched. Pressed open the seams and measured. I was at 8 1/4. Mmmm? Back to pressing and using my best press carefully pressed again. Carefully is the key. Back to the cutting table, measured again. Lo and behold it measured 8.50. Sliced my first section, pinned and sewed. Came out perfect.

With everyone's helpful hints its like having a class on line. I certainly have learned a lot in the last few weeks.

Thank you

Well, the quilt is 79" by 79" and the green stems on the sides go from top to bottom. I have a feeling that we'll be stitching some strips together. How many ways can we make bias? I remember a Suzanne Marshall way of making bias from way back that was really sharp...might have to look that up.

Thank you everyone for suggestions, so lovely to be part of this caring and helpful forum. Margo that technique definitely looks like the way to go for piecing those strips, I will try it. Thank you so much for that comprehensive tutorial on strip piecing using graph paper, love it. However I have finished all the strips for this month and they seem to be okay as I pieced one of the rectangles and triangles yesterday and it worked out fine. (Thanks again for your video on accurate 1/4" seams). As for the rest of those strip units, they will be keepers. Looking at the pic of the finished quilt, perhaps those long green stems will be cut at 1 1/2" and Barb and I will be doing lots of unpicking haha.

Actually....the original quilt uses a single fold binding, but the fabric has been embellished with decorative stitching before the strips were cut,
so you may want to keep that option open!
Check this out! You can click twice on the photo to see an up-close and personal view of the stitching that was added to a solid red fabric! :D
