TOPIC: Embroidery Tutes

Re: Embroidery Tutes 22 Jan 2011 16:17 #54377

Looks like just you and me Ali, the brits!!! lol. I have bernina version 5 Editor Plus, can do little amount of digitizing, but can change designs that are already done! I dont have time to do anything myself, and only have one machine capable of embroidery, so when that is going, have to wait before can do anything else.

I have the Brother PE Design LITE which can add lettering and arrange images, not much customisation of digitized designs available, but it does what I need and it wasn't too expensive. I then use the Wilcom Truesizer free software to convert to the EXP format if I want to use the embroidery module for my Bernina 630 (which I borrow from a very good friend :o )), otherwise I use my Brother machine to do the embroidery.

Hi JoJo 11 Jan 2010 04:12 #42341

I have Embird 2008, I have to download 2010. I also have Pfaff 4d,
I like using Embird, but I do not digitize. I really do not need to because of all the things that Embird does, either adding or taking away from the designs. 4D allows me more unusual fonts. 4D costs twice as much than Embird did.
My machine is the new Brother Quatro 6000d, I have been using Embird now for the last 6 or 7 years.
Your website is great, so is your tutorials, I love the little pea eaters. Deb :D

Thanks JoJo
Will look forward to seeing that. However, I have done something (to quote Superman) I dont know what, but machine is sewing great! I use a multi thread stand attached to machine, when I ran out of thread, I took the thread out of the extra wire guide, generally used for bobbin winding and forgot to put it back when I had finished winding the bobbin. So the thread went straight from the cone, up through the guide and down into the machine! So dont know if it was the threading up, or new bobbin or combination of both! Could also be that machine realised that I might junk it if it kept on playing up.  Still, would like to know why it happened in the first place!

"I have been getting the occassional loops of top thread on top! so tightened up top tension!"

Tension can be a little on the mysterious side. I have to take my baby dog to the doctor now but when I get back I will make a short video on bobbin tension. If you are like me, visuals are worth more than 1000 words.

Thanks JoJo
I supposeon reflection, that as they have a magnet in them they are heavier than normal bobbins, plus you can only buythemin packs of 100. So, I will be the guinea pig for the Bernina users!!! and I might have to import them myself if they are as good as you say and others want them!!!

I read your post on 'the finger' and burst out laughing! after I posted it and read it back, I think I was thinking of what you were as well!
I have a separate one for embroidery and it has a 'pigtail'! but I have fiddled with the tension screw tightening and loosening as required (thought it required it!) I tried using the drop method to test the tension, but there must be a knack with it as the bobbin kept on dropping out onto the floor and I spent longer finding it than sewing!
With the latest project, I have been using bottom line for most of stitch out, then the satin border, changing to Isocord in bobbin to match top thread. The Isocord seems thicker to I was changing the tension! Although its OK, its not perfect! plus I have been getting the occassional loops of top thread on top! so tightened up top tension! really confused myself here!!! :( :( :( :(

Sorry about the essay! But I am a teacher, so that explains it!!
Best wishes

Cannot see the spring, and do you mean 'the finger'? rather than pigtail. ROFL

Finger, hmmm... okay finger, pigtail. It's the wire that ends in a spiral that you thread the bobbin thread through on the outside of the bobbin case. That helps to use the finger when doing embroidery. LOL -- I'm so bad, you don't want to know what that sentence made me think of!!!

The spring if you had one would be on the inside. For the magna bobbins that I'm going to mail you, you would not want to have that spring in there. I do not recommend anyone taking that spring out if they have one because I have never been able to get it back in properly and wouldn't want you mad at me. I purchased an extra case to use just for embroidery.

I was checking out the magna bobbins after reading your advice, they sounded good, BUT, and a big BUT. I cannot find a UK dealer and the shipping for them from USA is mind blowing! 100 bobbins retailing around $30 -$39 and the shipping from $60 -$99 wow. That seems rediculous as they are only small and not the heavy. So, will wait until a UK dealer stocks them!!!!

Thanks again

Lynn

Lynn,

Email me your address privately and I will mail you a couple to try. A couple should fit in an airmail envelope and not cost too much for me to send to you.

Hi JoJo
Thanks, that was really quick! Another question if you please! When I was emnbroidering over the last couple of days, got into real trouble, etc. most of it was caused by what I would call 'backspin' (tennis term?) in the bobbin. When I took it out, there was lots of loose thread wound round and it wasnt there when I wound itl Was really careful to put some tension on it to wind smoothly!!!! was causes that????

Thanks
Lynn

Actually the word you used "backspin" is pretty accurate. I don't have that problem on my commercial machine but have had it on my home machine -- mostly when there is a sharp turn or stop or when there is a 180 degree direction change. The machine stops and does what it's supposed to but if the bobbin is still moving a bit, it can cause a bit of a mess like you described.

Remind me because I can't remember. Look inside your bobbin case like you are getting ready to insert the bobbin into it before putting the bobbin case into the machine. When you look inside the bobbin case, do you have a little tension spring on the inside of it? It would be pressed pretty flat against the back and you may have never noticed it before. Also do you have a little pigtail on your case that you use for embroidery?
