I like that idea Helen. I just took a quilt off my bed that my mom made that looks about like 'bhaldard''s quilt and I should at least get a picture of it before it gets put back and forgotten about. My son brought me the quilt I made him in 2008 that he has used for a bedspread and wanted to know if I could repair it. The cats had clawed one side trying to get on bed. I still have plenty of the backing fabric and some red. I think I just need to replace 9 inches on one side and it will look ok.
I just thought of something. I had an old quilt that my husband's grandmother made that my son took to college (my son must be hard on quilts) that was ready for rag pile. It was faded white and I cut it up and made Christmas stocking. I used red fabric (from my son's quilt) for the band and appliqued the names in white fabric but the stocking if from the quilt. I made the first one in 2012 when my first grandson was born, and have made a total of 10 as the family has grown. I daughter has requested 4 for this Christmas to use at her house.
halberd, Wonderful idea. Nothing comes to mind right away, but another suggestion would be to take the picture and print it in color 8 by 10 on something like
June Tailor Fabric that runs thru the printer. Heat set it and make a fabric book of quilt tops from your grandmother made to remember what the quilts looked like. Hope someone
comes up with an idea for you. I think the concept is wonderful. HelenW

I am almost embarrassed to post this picture of the quilt on my bed. It has obviously outlived its useful lifetime. It is a top my grandmother gave to me more than 60 years ago. I added a border and had it hand quilted some time in the 80's. I can't bear to just throw it away even though I still have about 20 more tops from her just waiting to be put into action as a source of warmth and comfort. The Boy Scouts have a ceremony for the retirement of American flags, why don't we have something for the retirement of these personal treasures? I keep coming up blank so I am throwing it open to the group. I know collectively we can come up with something. Happy quilting ya'll.
