TOPIC: Jacqueline de Jonge's colourful quilt

Re: Jacqueline de Jonge's colourful quilt 19 Sep 2014 15:12 #121580

I notice a lot of the wall hangings have busy, beautiful, bright corner pieces around the circle and for the final border. How are you quilting these areas when the fabric is so busy the thread probably won't show up much anyway?

What thread are you using?

I am still doing stitch in the ditch around the flying geese and around the spikes using Bottomline thread. Actually taking longer than making the top but that's okay, I enjoy doing it.

Glad I used a busy fabric on the back so my imperfections don't show.

Goto Quilt Gallery.
Under the "Main' menu bar, there is another menu - you should see "Show & tell". Click on this and you will find the Jacqueline de Jonge quilt picture.

I posted mine in the show and tell section where it says upload picture. The few instructions are fairly straightforward. Good luck.

Mine sizing was off, but I only sewed once. Where are we supposed to post pix?

I did my second stitching directly on top of the first stitching and everything turned out perfectly.

Mine turned out fine. I did the 1/4 in. The second time you do it just evens out if you missed it the first time. Makes it smoother.

A good question about where the stitching on the 2nd round was. I did it inside the first stitching which may have caused my circle to end up that 1/4" smaller and caused may problems. Hmmm. I could not have completed this project based on the written instructions alone. having said that, I learned a lot. Doing something with a circle was on my list for this year...I certainly waited long enough!!! Let us know your progress.

I posted a picture of the first star inside the spike circle. I am still wondering if when she sewed the conecting seam a second time - was it on the inside or outside of her original first seam? In the video it looked like she sort of rounded the second seam in either way as she saw fit
I agree with previous comments that the written instructions are not that clear and would like to know if she uses smaller stitches for the paper piecing parts.
Next weekend I'll tackle that outer circle and hope I'll not be off by 1/4 inch.
Cheers

I haven't quilted mine yet, Rochelle, but I have some plans. I'll do SID using invisible thread on top and probably Bottom Line or So Fine in the bobbin. The rest of the quilting will probably be done with Glide in the top and bobbin in the flying geese, compass points and narrow borders where I want the quilting to show. The background will probably be quilted with So Fine. These plans could change a bit as I start looking at thread colors.

A quick question for those who have quilted their tops. What kind of thread did you use, both top and bottom? Did you stitch in the ditch? Thanks for your advice. Rochelle

Sorry to have been off line . Nancy answered your question with the process I used. My outer ring is slightly larger than the matching borders because I didn't want to redraft the square or the geese. I'm not sure it could have been blocked out evenly. I can't wait to see more completed projects.

Disclaimer: I didn't make this quilt. However, If I had a block that 1/4" off with a lot of seams. I'd block it out with a lot of pins, spray starch it and stretch it. Sharon Schamber has a Youtube video on this process.

I didn't have a problem. It fit fine.
