I usually get cones so I use the bigger plastic drawers from Target. When my collection was small, I divided them by type: solid, variegated, silk, metallic, invisible, etc. As sections have grown, I've subdivided them by brand (FilTec Glide, Superior SoFine, etc) and then by color. I have color cards for my favorite brands and for anything that gave them away and I put marks by each color that I have so I can use that for a quick reference if needed. I usually use the color cards when ordering new thread and use the thread itself when picking colors at home.

I use the small sets of drawers that you can get in the diy hardware stores, I think they are actually for storing nuts, bolts, nails and screws etc, but they work well to me. Just take some sample spools with you when you go shopping to check which ones fit

I keep all my variegated ones in a shallow basket by my sewing machine and the rest in open top boxes or ziplock bags - both by type and colour.
I am thinking of getting a wooden thread hangers of sorts though...

cheers

I never heard of too much thread  I have mine sorted by color and further by type, in bins from Joann's purchased with coupons.

I have too much thread!
I can't figure out a good way to store it all so I don't lose track of what I have!
Anybody have a good method?
