Just spoken to a friend who went to Bombay/Mumbi, and she said that there are dress fabric shops & department stores with good haberdashery/fabric sections. Silks, cottons - plain & woven patterns & embroidered fabrics of all sorts. If you go for saris you will get about 6 yds x 43"(ish) of fabric, with a woven border down each selvedge, and a woven pattern across one end of approximately 1 yard, some of them have a section of less dense pattern, and then the rest is plain (just measured a sari length I own).

What to get in India? 24 Jul 2012 10:10 #84850

Hello Friends -
My son is spending the next week or so in India helping a friend move and get settled. They will be in the New Delhi and Agra area. (This is the same guy who bought me 50 FQs for my 50th birthday - gotta love him!) Anyway, for those of you who have traveled there, what should he bring back fabric-wise (I'm assuming silks...but yardage, saris?) and where should he shop. Maybe more importantly, what should he avoid. Your advice (as always) and speedy reply would be greatly appreciated.
Best wishes,
Mike
