TOPIC: Have you seen WHY QUILTS MATTER?

Re: Have you seen WHY QUILTS MATTER? 23 Sep 2011 09:58 #69580

Yesterday, I got to watch it for free from the Quilt Show - thank you all.

Got to say that I did not find it very profound or very interesting. So what if some quilt seller in the 80's made this lady buy so-so quilts as well as nice quilts. I think the video needed more directed focus. If the other segments are like this, I would not buy it.

My goodness, if the whole series is like this episode, we'll sure learn a lot. This episode was obviously very well researched and presented lots of interesting information. I thought, however, that the production value was low -- too static, too much "talking heads." I felt more like I was sitting at a lecture rather than viewing a presentation of fascinating information about a subject I just love.

Perhaps it was just this episode, but the addition of more video on location, more pictures of quilts with the lecture material voiced over it and perhaps some interesting background music would have made the presentation more fluid -- more fun to watch. After all, this is a visual medium and we've come to expect rather sophisticated presentations these days.

All said, I think that I'll still probably order the DVDs just because the information is so valuable. Thanks TQS for the opportunity to preview the series.

My dvds have been ordered so I can enjoy them when I have the time to watch them. As with Stitched and any class I've taken or show I've watched on this site, I always learn something new. And isn't that the greatest delight of all? To continue to learn!

I just finished watching this film and I liked it better than I liked "Stitched". I am very happy to have had the opportunity to check it out and to decide whether or not this is something that I would like to buy. Having seen it I will probably buy it because I would be aggravated if I missed one of the series. So, thanks ARJJ!

It's always easy to criticize something you have not been involved in making. I have watched the third programme that TQS so generously made available for us for free (Thank you, Guys! You serously rock!). I have always had my own thoughts about the quilt industry and it was rather satifying to have some of my thoughts confirmed by someone who had the time and energy to do some in-depth research. My only (very little) grumble: I would have loved to see the name of the quilts and makers (where known) blended in at the bottom of the picture.

Seeing that I don't have a husband that needs nagging I'll just go ahead and buy the dvds for myself. So, my very personal viewing programme for over the Christmas holidays is all set: Some old episodes of the A-Team (I'm the very happy owner of a complete set), possibly series 8 of TQS, Why Quilts Matter, and the German language version of all the spiderman films (a gift from a friend, sent to me with the comment 'There are lots of webs in it. Does that count as textile related?')

Yes, I have resorted to buying for myself in the past and presenting it with "Oh, look what you bought me for Christmas"! Or as my mother always says "Do it yourself Pat"! :D

Rita to help him remember, how about you supervise him ordering it (or do it yourself) and give it to him to wrap it up for you.

I watched 'Why Quilts Matter' yesterday evening and I found it very interesting. From what I can gather this is episode 3 and I guess that the first two episodes would deal with the history of quilts which might put it more in perspective. I liked the scholarly approach and I found it much more satisfying than "Stitched" which I thought was too fragmented and lacking real depth.

I have put in my order for the series as a Christmas present from DH...I hope he remembers

I had already ordered a copy of the DVD as our local PBS is not showing the series.... There is a hot and angry letter writing campaign by local guilds. What did you think of the preview?

I think there was to much of the talking head and not enough beautiful quilts. I also would have liked more of the artist and quilter interviews. I think I saw one of Ricky's Rhapsody quilts being shown.
