Eileen, I'm not surprised to see that they don't have room in their 'tight schedule.' I also emailed my local PBS station but haven't heard back yet. I love to cook but I'm so sick of all of the cooking programs which many do not teach healthy options. I'm surprised that so many television stations are missing out on a multi-billion dollar industry such as quilting. The only station that shows crafting daily here is the BYU station I get on cable. They usually show the recent Fons and Porter shows.

This is what I got from my local PBS station:

Dear Eileen,

Please accept our sincere apologies for the long delay in replying.

We regret that "Why Quilts Matter" is not currently scheduled to air on Thirteen.

Please be assured that although we would like to air all the programs our viewers would like to see, it is very difficult because of our tight schedule. However, we have forwarded your request to the appropriate staff to be tallied with others we receive. Our guide at http://www.thirteen.org is always available for you to check for possible programming changes.

Many thanks for taking the time to write and for your interest in Thirteen.

Yours truly,

Please air the documentary "Why Quilts Matter...." . It is an important miniseries that will garnish you many viewers and possibly many donations. Quilters are an awesome and extremely large sub-culture. Please don't sweep us aside.

MARGO :!:

it is under the thread 'Need advice for quilting a kalidoscope quilt' - perfectly natural place to find it wouldn't you say!
forum/i-need-quilting-related-advice/4734-need-advice-for-quilting-kaleidoscope-quilt I wedged it's location into my memory cells because I knew I would want to go back for it sometime.

Margo, not Rosemary here, but the Snipping Tool, free in Win7, will do this. I think Jing Snagit will also. It's wild to do it the first time, just amazing that we can snitch a photo out of a video.

I think there was to much of the talking head and not enough beautiful quilts. I also would have liked more of the artist and quilter interviews. I think I saw one of Ricky's Rhapsody quilts being shown.

What are the guilds angry about? Who are they writing to? PBS?

THEY were angry because the local PBS stations were not planning to show the special....
I got the DVD and did not like watching it....PLANNING TO GIVE TO THE GUILD... so they can look at for themselves.
Not enough quilts... too many talking heads... droning on and on....
Taking a half hour to say something that could have been said in a couple of sentences. ... A lot of what was said was self promotion by the producer.

I think they will turn off non quilters .....

But then again this is just my opinion.

I enjoyed the episode. They're not showing it in my viewing area so if I want to see it, I'll have no choice but to buy the dvds.

The gentleman in the screen capture is Gerald Roy. He is a Consultant for the National Quilt Museum, a quilt collector and quilt maker from Warner NH.

Here is his web site link: http://www.pilgrimroy.com/
On that page is contact info, if anyone is interested in contacting him about the quilt in the screen shot. Looking at his own quilts, which are very arty, makes me think that this is not one of his, but I'm not sure.

Rosemary, would it be possible for you to provide a link to the info about the screen capture that you were able to use? I can't find it!

Rosemary, I sure love that quilt as well. It appears strips were sewn together, but how did they get that cool curve? I've never seen a template in that shape.

Also, I can't remember the man's name in the photo, but I think he collects antique quilts, which makes me wonder if this was an old, unusual quilt he found somewhere.

If you figure it out, please share.

I've just managed to watch the show and found it fasinating, it covers a lot of background to our hobby, which we generally don't bother to think about. I agree with Lorchan though, that it would have been nice if they had noted the names of quilts & makers at the bottom of the screen.

I really liked the look of a quilt behind a gentleman about 2/3rds of the way in, and had to go back and find Margo's instruction on screen page capture, so I could get a copy of the picture to study it some more!

I love the apparant movement and flow in this quilt!

I bought the DVDS and I regret it..... I wish I had saved my money.... I had such high hopes for this series.... I LOVE HISTORY / I LOVE QUILTS but this series made me fall asleep. TOO preachy, too many talking heads. It would take them 15 minutes to say something that could have been said in two sentences.

Frankly I think it will turn off non quilters when it shows on PBS. Most of the quilter and Gerald Roy interviews were interesting but there were not enough of them.

I thought they would have a quilt gallery on the DVD as extra, there was not.

PRODUCTION quality was poor..... I wanted a PLAY ALL button because I just like putting the DVD in and letting it run. I resented having to re-boot the next episode.

So save your money and just watch it on TV..... I am truly disappointed in the series.
