I HAVE BEEN USING INEXPENSIVE FELT AS BATTING FOR MY TABLE RUNNERS. MOST OF THE FELT FABRIC IS WASHABLE THEREFORE THE TABLE RUNNER CAN BE WASHED. THE FELT IS ALSO EASY TO QUILT!!!! WAY TO GO!!!!!!

Insul-bright (heat resistant) is a good flat batting, and I also like Warm & Natural for table runners.

Not sure about the laying flat problem but I use the heat reflective one. You can guarantee hot things will be put on it at some stage!

I've just made a couple of placemats using Hobb's Heirloom Cotton (80/20 blend) and they are perfectly flat!
