TOPIC: Silver Star dinner presentation

23 Oct 2008 18:07 #27527

Alex, I'm so glad that you are getting this award. You really do deserve it! I am really disappointed that I won't be there this year. This is the first year in about 7 years that I haven't been to the show and it figures that this would be the one I'd have to miss. Like so many of the others I've followed you from Simply Quilts and was sorry to see it go but am so happy that The Quilt Show has evolved and that you and Ricky are doing such a wonderful job!! I would love to see your quilts and also those you may have been given that also tell your story and who help make you the wonderful person you are today. I would love to hear more than 20 minutes, if I could be there but I know you will make 20 minutes more than entertaining. Have a great time and enjoy every minute of the accolades. You deserve them all.

Alex, of course we want to know every little thing about your entire life, but you have been such an inspiration to so many quilters, I would like to know who inspired you? Who do you consider your mentors from the early days? You said in episode 213 that Mary Mashuta was your first teacher; are there others? And what do you think is the most important thing that teachers should strive to instill in their students?

Alex, I will be at your dinner and have been at at least 10 of the last Silver Star Salutes. IMHO, the most meaningful ones have been about the person: your journey as a quilter and as a person, with photos of way back when as well as your quilts. Talking about the role quiltmaking has played in your personal journey of life would be well-received. Your early work is fun to see as well as what you're doing now. Yep, 20 minutes will fly by and I just know you will be superb--enjoy your well-deserved recognition--you have meant a lot to millions of quiltmakers, most you'll never know.

"Congratulations",well deserved. I know you started sewing at an early age but what actually lit the spark for you to start quilting. What inspired you to teach and share with others world wide. You have given so much to the world and you have taught me alot and I'm sure many thousands. I appreciate all that you have contributed. I agree on all the advice thats given. "You'll be brilliant" Enjoy.

Alex,
First, congratulations on the Silver Star, truly deserved. To your question, I agree, share how you got to that point with/through your quilts. I will be in Houston, but not at your dinner.
Enjoy and Best Wishes,
Pat

Wow, What a challenge, Alex! If I had the opportunity to listen, to your 20 minutes, I would hope that not only would you show your first/last quilt and talk briefly about the journey that got you to the last quilt; but that you would also talk about those that helped you get there. Thanks for asking. I hope there is a way that you can post what you said on TQS! Terry

I'm not going to be there either but I agree that just hearing about what's on your heart - both in the past that made you do all the wonderful things you've done and what are your hopes and vision for the future of your own quilting and that of the community of quilters.

I wish I could be there to see you get the award and hear your speech. I would love to see a video if it is taped. I know how your story began, seen some of your lovely quilts in books and magazines. Talk from your heart, tell us where you are going, show the quilts that are most special to you. Congrats!! Sandi in FL

Congratulations, Alex, on the Silver Star! I won't make it to Houston this year, but look forward to hearing from my TQS buddies about the event that honors you!

If I were there, I would love to hear about some of the quilts that are most special to you and why they hold that place in your in heart and are memorable on your journey! I also think that sharing some of your recent art shows your continual growth and diversity as a quilter. I believe the most well recieved "speeches" are the ones that come from the heart!

You have always been (and will always be) a star in my book! :!:

Have a wonderful evening and ENJOY!
