TOPIC: Hey to MI Quilters

18 Jun 2009 07:17 #36061

Hi again -- Rosemary Youngs also lives in that area, author of "The Amish Circle Quilt", "The Civil War Diary Quilt", and "The Civil War Love Letter Quilt". Don't know if she speaks, but she's a wonderful quilter. I don't think she has a website but I did find her in Webshots under rosemaryjane102, lots of pics of her work. You could also reach her thru the LQS in Grand Rapids, "Attic Window Quilt Shop", unbelievably I don't have their ph# on hand, but they are on Alpine Ave in GR, and they are a wonderful shop & would be a good resource of speakers for you, too! Lastly, have you ever attended a West Michigan Quilt Guild Meeting? They're a wonderful Guild & have a huge every-other year show, next one is October 2010. They have an extensive website. As you can tell, I loved quilting in Michigan! Kathy B.

Kathy B,
Thanks for the links to the locals. It has been amazing to see how many "big name quilters" are in this areas.

LadyRags,
Thanks for the reminder. I forget about that flyer until my husband sees one and hands it to me.

Get a copy of the COUNTRY REGISTER... it advertises gift shops and quilt shops/ shows across the state by geographic regions. Any company that advertises in it get 100 free copies to hand out as advertisement for their shop... quilters always look for this flier.

When I go on my MI vacation I grab it and we stop by any shops enroute to where we are going. I think it is a great place to start.

Hi, I used to live in Grand Rapids, MI, a wonderful area! I can think of two people who are great authorities in their areas of expertise, don't know if they give talks but wouldn't hurt to ask:
*Laura Bailey, The Surrogate Stitcher, longarm quilter, her email is mailto:QuilterLLB@aol.com or used to be! I can give you her phone # privately if that doesn't work.
*Gaye Bomer, http://www.sentimentalstitches.com -- her website is full of info about her family's longstanding interest in & collecting of older quilts. Free patterns, and I believe she has a talk or two.
Let us know how it turns out! MI is a wonderful place to be a quilter! Kathy B.

Mackinaw Area Shops 10 Jun 2009 20:40 #35926

Hey MI Quilters,
Any suggestions for the Mackinaw area for quilt shops? My DSD is coming over from Thailand and we are spending the July 4th weekend on the Island. I have never been there before (only been in MI for 18 mo). DH is very supportive but I have had him on several wild goose chases up north.

Sorry Kimber but I had to go to Alabama to be with my mom as she passed so didn't make it again. I've tried so many times to visit that guild because it sounds like it's very active. I'll keep trying.

I hit a Kalamazoo quilt retreat last weekend and loved it!! They'll have it again next year the weekend of March 12.

Also - for anyone interested, the AA quilt guild is hosting a retreat July 31, through Aug 2. You can request a registration booklet through the website at http://www.gaaqg.com. I went 2 years ago and had a fabulous time! It doesn't look like I'll be able to make it this year since it coincides with a trip to visit my parents. There are a couple classes I'd love to take also - sigh.

Hey to MI Quilters 19 Feb 2009 11:05 #32571

I'm in Lansing, MI. I am a member of the Lansing Area Patchers guild.

I haven't done much shopping over the past year. Need to use what I already have as much as possible. Country Stitches is the closest to me. I do shop at Walmart and Joann's for some things.

I live in Shelby Twp and frequent The Village Quilt Shop in Lake Orion, Sew Elegant in Port Huron (their batiks are to die for!), Guildcrafters and Quint n'Friends in Sterling Heights.

And I really miss Quilter's Corner in Clinton Township.

I belong to the Macomb County Quilt Guild.
