My mom's first wedding dress might have you beat Florence, lol. She bought it at a yard sale for a dollar I think it was. Of course she was only 16 and was...ahem... in a little bit of a hurry  It was a blue prom dress actually, really pretty if I do say based on the pictures. Unfortunately the marrage did not last - she and my father divorced just before what would have been their 21st wedding anniversary. For her second marrage she found a bargan again though, in a lovely simple scoop neck white dress identicle to the one I wore for my highschool graduation. She bought that one for $15 and I helped her add bridal appliques and beadwork to it ourselves and make the veil - it turned out absolutely lovely :D The white dress seemed to be the charm - she and my step father have been married for going on 13 years so far 8)

I think I've got the record for cheap wedding dress... actually my veil cost 4x as much... I got the veil at a seasonal clearance from the bridal department at my then-employer department store, and paid a full $19.99 for it. Do the math, yep, the dress was $4.99!! Ok, it was a cocktail dress, ballerina length ecru lace. But it worked, been married 20 years! With the cost of weddings these days I'm glad I have boys!!

But I love your idea for the dishes! As far as I'm concerned ya'll have the right attitude on this! Best wishes, Florence

This and That 20 Apr 2008 15:58 #17135

Florence, thanks for letting me know that you received the ties.

Barbara, I'm sorry I don't have any left or I'd send you some. Maybe someone else has some that you can get.

Well, my husband does have one or two, just in case our daughter absolutely, totally maaaaakes him wear one to her wedding!!! Actually, he probably won't have to wear one. The wedding will either be in our yard or on a beach. She recently brought home calla lilies to plant for her wedding. Mama (me) will make the dress, and the food!! She says that if her wedding costs $2,000, she'll be surprised. Oh, and we're buying dishes at garage sales to have mixed up ones instead of having all the same.

I'm glad we're all back together.

Everybody have a great week, Sharon in TN (quiltnlady)

Sorry to tell you ladies but I got the ties! :D They arrived today...a shoebox full (many thanks Sharon!!) and truly don't look so bad, I'll have to make sure my guys don't think they're for them! This quilt will have to stay in my head for quite a while, first, there are so many others lined up in front, second it'll take a while to collect enough... I haven't decided just what pattern I'll use, but there's one w/ shirts also in "Quilts for Guys".

I posted a reply to the great person in Tennessee who had ties to give away. We all got lost with the forum foibles--please contact me if you still have the ties looking for a new home.

Neck Tie Quilt 18 Apr 2008 14:08 #17005

I had posted this prior to the Forum being down and now can't find the topic - might just be my "vision" but anyway I'll post it here again :? .

A few people were talking about sending each other old ties, etc and I just happen to notice that the latest "Quiltmaker's Spring Special Issue 2008" has a great pattern in it for old ties AND shirts. This is so cool and I'm thinking would make a neat Father's Day gift!

Same issue has featured also another "version" of the "Fat Quarter Sampler" froma couple years ago - I have that one in my quilt profile and have received comments about it.

Happy Quilting!
