Betty Jo,
I love the loud crashing classics too!! I find that if I'm trying to concentrate, I prefer instrumentals. Otherwise, I'm following along with the words instead of the quilt instructions.
When I'm on the longarm, I like music DVDs. I have the Eagles concert from Melbourne-that's my favorite. I like being able to quilt and every now and then just look up. It's much better than trying to watch tv where I have to stop so follow what they're saying.

I love music while I'm working--great crashy dramatic classical music, like the Verdi Requiem--is my favorite while I'm quilting, or even earthy Rennaissance Rascal music, or bag pipes, , but I love all forms of classical music, except Tchaikovsky, and even SOME of his.

I listen to Old Time Radio on Xm radio. I have one in my car and one in my quilt room. Luckily they repeat the stories so when I get really involved in my quilting i can listen to it again.

I also love books on tape. I always have one in the car and another by my sewing machine. The library has so many to choose from. If I'm sewing I don't have time to sit and read and vice versa. If I try to watch TV and sew pretty soon I'll find myself just leaning on my machine watching tv and not sewing. Listening to books works great. Karen

books on tape/cd 09 Feb 2008 16:25 #13549

I'm with Ntrquilter and Mandysilk. I love to listen to books on tape or CD while quilting. I seem to get more done that way. I will sew until the book is done -- not getting side tracked by nuisances like laundry, vacuming or making supper.

I also like the books on tape or CD, especially while I am hand quilting since hearing over my machine can be hard. It is especially nice to have both the book and the CD so I can really read when I get the chance. I go to my public library and check them out from time to time since they have a wonderful selection and it is a lot cheeper than buying them. The last one I did was James Patterson's The Lake House (not the same as the movie by the same name), which was the sequel to Where the Wind Blows which I read over the summer. I also am a techno-horror story nut so you are most likely to find Douglis Preston/Lincolin Child books or Stephen King in my player. I need to get to the library and check out the last Dark Tower book since that is what I am reading right now and I know I would finish faster if I listen while I quilt too. Other recent selections I recommend are Shoot the Moon, Sarah (modern retelling of the storie of Sarah and Abraham), and Brimstone (Preston/Child).

Happy,
I watch HGTV on the weekends when I'm on the longarm. I love the shows on organization and the new stuff for kitchens.
We just got digital tv from cable and it has a bunch of music channels-I'm thinking I'll work my way through them one at a time. I might find something new to listen to :D and I'm always open to that.

yes i have done the music in my head but the problem is it gets stuck like a record that is skipping on one phrase of the song. that is why i listen to music it also keeps the other voices in my head quiet. you know the ones that say you really dont have to finish this..... music is good.

Most often, SILENCE - ssssshhhhh! I'm listening to the music in my head.
Next often - classic rock XM which comes on satellite TV. I'm a child of the 60's.
Next - books on tape from the library.
All of this is turned upside down, however, if my Kansas University Jayhawk basketball team is playing. Then I'm watching basketball, baby! 8)

Well, I am the different one! I listen to books on tape or CD books while I sew. The library has so many to choose from, and my favorite authors are always available. I can keep them out for three weeks. :D

Music, ah, yes. Sometimes, it's one of Ricky's CDs. Sometimes, it might be Greatest Hits from the late 16th century--I love Michael Praetorius. And sometimes people driving past might see me through the window, ironing and dancing at the same time, to the Rolling Stones, Saffire the Uppity Blues Women, The Band, Rare Earth, lots of oldies. And sometimes just silence.
