TOPIC: November's Flying Geese Borders

30 Nov 2009 11:20 #40848

I finally started the sewing on the geese using the paper piecing method as I want to get more proficient. It was painful to begin with as I am truely upsidedown and backwards challenged. I got better as I went along but OMG it was bad to begin with. Gloria

Judy, when the quilt says its done, it is always best to listen to it!

I'm not going to add the flying geese--my quilt has told me it's finished. I've had the top on my quilt ladder and I've been looking at it deciding if I should add more. It just feels finished. I'm actually making flying geese for a Civil War quilt, so I'm not just chicken!

I just started cutting fabric today. I wish the quilt fairy would come and do them for me. I know it will be just fine once I get started sewing but the starting part is not wanting to happen.

I was reading Sue's directions about adjusting the geese to fit the quilt. It seems to me that before adding the previous floater it would be prudent to wait and see what the geese measure and then calculate the floater to fit the geese.

Since she taught this skill, I intent to wait and use it for making my geese fit. Sounds easier than going back and adjusting the strips to fit.

I only have 6 of the 88 required geese strips done, so it will be awhile. ha

Oh, Montana Lady, you were smart to plan to hang. The further I get I'm thinking with all this work, I wish I could hang it, but I can't afford a house large enough to hang this baby! It's getting huge! I'm kind of happy to be back at 'small' pieces like geese. More manageable!

Good, Denise - that made me feel better to hear. I have my geese attached. Since I used the sawtooth stars instead of the pinwheels, this is where I planned to stop all along - mainly because this is the size I need for where I plan to hang it. I'll post a picture in Show & Tell soon.

Well, I started my geese and am doing the PP method with one change. I'm too tight (ha) to use a rectangle for the "goose" part so I cut triangles a wee bit larger than the required goose triangle. Then I cut the side triangles a wee bit larger than required. I have very little waste this way. I like that.

I finally have my geese attached. They measured exactly what Sue said they should and my quilt with borders measured what it was supposed, yet I had to take one of the geese blocks off all 4 sides. Then it fit perfectly. Don't know where I went wrong, but they are on now.

me too. I finished one border and 41 fits perfect not 42 so I think my floaters will have to be bigger next month.

Hi Margo..well, I'm final finished the flying geese border..I must have miss counted as I had to make a couple of extra geese. After all the borders were on, I measured my centre and I'm only getting 68..I think I'm suppose to have 69 1/2...oops! something wrong there. With the next borders can I make up the difference??

Not a problem!! We will add another floater before the stars, and you can insert a second one if just one looks too wide!
Doncha just love how the floaters make everything come together!
